This applies to Debian sarge kernels kernel-image-2.4.27-2-686, 2.6.8-3-686,
2.6.16-2-686, and 2.6.17-2-686...
I am trying to setup a Dell Optiplex GX1p system, which has a daughterboard
PCI bridge for its PCI and ISA slots:
00:0f.0 PCI bridge: Digital Equipment Corporation DECchip 21152 (rev 03)
However, this bridge is completely ignored and unseen by Linux. It does not
show up in lspci or dmesg (as far as I can tell) at all. The daughterboard is
plugged in, and the PCI cards on it are powered.
How could I go about troubleshooting the problem? Has anyone experienced
something like this before?
Thanks,
Luke-Jr

Hi Luke,
I have one machine with a PCI Bridge problem. This machine has PCI
TV cards behind a bridge. The cards are never recognized on a warm
boot but they are always found when the machine is cold booted. Go
figure.
Anyway, maybe you haven't cold booted the machine and could try that?

I have Dell Optiplex GX1's at the school district I'm covering at. I can test some stuff out with various live CDs if that would help.

lspci -vvxxx would be interesting
Linux on PC assumes the BIOS did the work needed so if there is some
custom "enabler" driver in the Windows for it that might explain
problems.

It's been cold-booted a few times, though I can't guarantee that for each
kernel I tried.

Will do tomorrow.

pci=nobios doesn't bypass that assumption? (I tried that too)

Some old Debian (2.2) manual at least implied it worked at one point. That's
where I compared the lspci from. So this would be a regression, a hardware
failure, or a misconfiguration.

I've used some of these boxes - they've always worked just fine in the
past, though I've not tried anything more current than earlyish 2.6
kernels I think.

Ok so the 21152 just isn't seen by Linux. Ok try this
lspci -vvxxx -H1 -M
that will try and do a hardware level scan and map

Go figure. Apparently the counterfiet-3Com NIC somehow disables the entire
daughterboard. I found another GX1p and used its daughterboard, noticed it
worked, then assumed the first one was bad... put the NIC in the second one
and it's "bad" all of a sudden. Both show up in lspci if I take the NICs out.
FWIW, the NIC claims to be 3C905CX-TXM assembled in USA and matches the
picture of the counterfeit 3Com cards in
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/data/ea-20.08.02-000/ (bottom of the second
picture)
