Hi,

Trying out 2.6.25-rc2 smartd always causes my box to hang. I can switch
vt:s and the keyboard seems to work.

Using sysrq-e I noticed a callpath open -> ext3 -> journals -> sync_buffer ->
io_scheduel -> generic_unplig_device.

I'd guess the open stems from smartd. Removing smartd from the startup, I'm
now using rc2 fine...

I got a nice jpg showing it as well.

Known issue?

/A

The sysrq-e output is probably just standard ext3 journalling unrelated
to the problem... what does dmesg say? lspci? What's your hardware setup?

dmesg ; smartd ; dmesg yields no new entries in dmesg. It seems on disk
accesses are dead. it still routes packets fine.

This is an old PII-300 with 2 IDS disks and a DVD R/W.

..

So that's using the old IDE drivers.
And the network and USB are sharing IRQ#11 with each other.

If you are going to be using newer kernels like this (2.6.23+),
then you might consider shifting those drives over to libata drivers.

This involves a little bit of work -- building a kernel with libata
and "ata_piix" built-in instead of the old IDE drivers,
and then rearranging /etc/fstab to match the new device names
(eg. /dev/sda instead of /dev/hda).

But at this point libata is working much better than the old IDE stuff,
and it really is worth moving things over if you can.

Cheers

Ok, I'll take a stab at that tomorrow. Two things...

Is smartd prepared to handle /dev/sdX style devices?

If this is the prefered driver these days, maybe it shouldn't be marked
experimental in the menu anymore?

/A

Yes. You need to pass "-d ata" to smartd and smartctl, if your scripts
are not already doing so.

It's not marked experimental.

the comment on the very top of drivers/ata says:

tristate "Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers"

this is a bit confusing

Yes, that will probably fix it for him, but but... maybe we should fix
that regression?

Having switched to ata_piix i can confirm that smartd doesn't hand the system
anymore.

Still.. There seem to be a bug vs. the old drivers somewhere. Will that be
addressed, or should there be a big warning for the old stuff (DEPRECATED?)

Could you try bisecting it down to the guilty commit using git-bisect?

[ the "old" stuff got few hundred commits in 2.6.25 ]

Thanks,
Bart

Will do. It'll take a while though. Not a fast machine and used by the

Ok, I got this:
852738f39258deafb3d89c187cb1a4050820d555 is first bad commit
commit 852738f39258deafb3d89c187cb1a4050820d555
Author: Bartlomiej Zolnierkiewicz <bzolnier@gmail.com>
Date: Sat Jan 26 20:13:12 2008 +0100

ide: convert "empty" REQ_TYPE_ATA_CMD requests to use REQ_TYPE_ATA_TASKFILE

Based on the previous work by Tejun Heo.

There should be no functionality changes caused by this patch.

Thanks.

Unfortunately nothing seems wrong with the patch... :(

I'll take a closer look when I have some more time...

Just to make sure I didn't goofed up the bisection...

I bisected between v2.6.24 and v2.6.25-rc2. In the midst of the bisection, make
install decided to call the new version 2.6.24-rc7-gXXXX. Is that ok? I figured
rc7+delta was before 24-final, hence outside the bisection? After that event I
got the normal series of good god bad good... So I figured we were on the right
track anyway...

I can testify this regression is still present in 2.6.25-rc3

Thanks.

I tried to reproduce it here (PIIX4 controller w/ IC25N060ATMR04-0 disk)
but I couldn't so it must be something specific to your hardware/system
configuration.

| Feb 22 00:09:19 tippex hda: UDMA/33 mode selected
| Feb 22 00:09:19 tippex hda: drive_cmd: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }

| Feb 22 00:09:19 tippex hdd: UDMA/33 mode selected

Code for changing transfer modes hasn't been rewritten yet and is known to
be racy/buggy. It could be that changes to the way special requests are
handled caused some races to trigger more likely.

[ libata doesn't support speed changes we should probably do the same for
drivers/ide/ (it does all the tuning anyway nowadays) ]

Please try the included patch (at the end of this mail).

If the patch doesn't help could you try removing smartd from system startup
and see if it could be run later from the command line?

Untested patch which may help in case that set_pio_mode() raced with
the queueing of the special request and block layer doesn't call
->request_fn_proc again if we were preempted previously (if PREEMPT=y).

I need some sleep... this patch is not going to help (though disabling
PREEMPT may be worth a try). Sorry for the confusion.

Ok, I'll drop the patch and, recompile without PREEMPT.

That's how I executed during the bisect. It works as a charm without smartd.
The moment I run it, boink, the first accessed hd freezed up. The other ones
are usable for a while, though the system tend to lock solid after a while.

Tested with PREEMPT_NONE. No change.

Thanks, this (and no success with PREEMPT_NONE) changes the perspective a bit.

and see if manually reverting only ide-taskfile.c change fixes the problem
(so we know that we are looking at the right place).

Also Alt-SysRq-T output for the hang would probably be very useful to tell
what is going on, maybe it is possible to still get it before system fully
stops?

I must admit that after auditing the patch & code for n-th time I still fail
to see the source of the problem (especialy now that the theory about exposing
races in the tuning code has also failed) as the _only_ changes introduced by
the guilty commit are that we are using different rq->cmd_type and testing for
rq->special instead of rq->buffer but both should be NULL. [ as it can be seen
be looking at ide_cmd_ioctl(), execute_drive_cmd() and ide_end_drive_cmd() ]

If anybody has some ideas on what could be wrong please help, in the meantime
I'm going to take a look at smartd code...

Thanks,
Bart

This is getting more interesting as smartd doesn't seem to be using "empty"
HDIO_DRIVE_CMD requests at all!

[ IOW the guilty commit should have zero influence on smartd. ]

Anders, could you send me ide-taskfile.s (make drivers/ide/ide-taskfile.s)
from before and after the commit? Maybe it is simply a compiler bug...

Thanks.
Bart

It does. Reverting the ide-taskfile.c change fixes it.
