The commit that introduced the problem went into Linus' tree after
2.6.27, so it's not a regression from 2.6.26.  In other words, 2.6.27
doesn't have the problem. It's a firmware bug in some old firmware
versions that got triggered by the kernel change, not a kernel bug per
se.

The commit has been reverted in Linus' tree now, so there isn't a
regression from 2.6.27 any more.

Paul.

The patch is in the XFS development tree. Given that the maintainers
didn't manage to get it into the merge window it might make sense to
submit this fix individually. Dave, what do you think about sending
this patch out directly to Linus?

With a random factor i also get this:

and the acpi stop handling all events, like powerbutton and other;

any assumptions?

Hallo, Andi,

Last I heard, the act of enabling CONFIG_RCU_CPU_STALL_DETECTOR
reduced the problem from a hang to a 3-second grace period. How
are things going with this now?

OK, I moved it to the list of regressions introduced between .26 and .27.

Thanks,
Rafael

Ah - this was reported as a 2.6.26 -> 2.6.27 regression, not a
.27->.28-rcX regression.

Even so, it's not obviously an XFS regression as the problem is
that alloc_pages(GFP_KERNEL) is the new failure on .27. The fact
that XFS never handled the allocation failure is not a new bug
or regression - it has never caught failures during log
allocation...

So really, if you want to look for a regression here, it is the
change of behaviour in the VM leading to a memory allocation failure
where it has never, ever previously failed...

Cheers,

Dave.

This message has been generated automatically as a part of a report
of recent regressions.

The following bug entry is on the current list of known regressions
from 2.6.27. Please verify if it still should be listed and let me know
(either way).
