OK, I've found the problem:
1. it does work with init=/bin/bash
2. it did not work after doing a binary search in the modules, even
removing all modules did not help
3. I figured out that it only happens when I update the CPU's microcode,
(booting with init=/bin/bash and /etc/init.d/microcode.ctl start
triggers it)
Even better: s2ram always gave me my display back when s2ram under
console.
Now I wonder if this is Bug #12100 ?
Unfortunately I need the microcode update, as I am suffering from
a) PAT WC disabled due to known CPU erratum.
b) coretemp coretemp.0: Errata AE18 not fixed, update BIOS or microcode of the CPU!
Anyway I now have a chance to test whether #11698 still occurs.

Well, that's quite likely.

Hm, #11698 is the $subject bug. Did you mean some other bug?

No, I meant this one (but it says freezes with > 1 s2ram cycle, which
was supposed to say: when working for days or hours but having s2ram'd
at least once the machine might freeze at some point)

[Here's something new, a list of regressions introduced between 2.6.26 and
2.6.27. We haven't fixed all of them yet and they're still being reported.
Also, they need to be fixed as well as those introduced later (although they
may be considered as "less important").
Quite frankly, I don't know how this is going to work out, but I thought
it's worth trying. Enjoy! ;-)]

Hi Rafael!
Well, Thomas already explained

| nmi_watchdog. I think we should remove the regression and keep the bug
| alive to chase the other issues.
|
| Thanks,
|

so we either have to change the topic of this bug or better
close it and post new one nmi_watchdog related. I may do so
but since Joshua was opening bug it would be better if he
make such an action. How do you think? (I've asked Joshua
for additional info but it seems he is too busy now)

There are really multiple issues touched in report. nmi_watchdog
hangs, rtc device creation, NULL deref...
I've asked Joshua for more information. Since he must to use
netdev tree for a while maybe we could wait 'till next merge
window will be closed and check if nmi_watchdog does work.
So the work in progress.

The softlockup issue itself is fixed, but there are issues with
nmi_watchdog. I think we should remove the regression and keep the bug
alive to chase the other issues.
Thanks,

Well, for the sake of documentation I'd prefer to close this bug and create a
new non-regression one for the other issues if that's not a problem.
Thanks,
