Hi,

I'm running a virtual host (kvm/qemu x86 32 bits 16 CPUs, debian wheezy) over a 
x86 64bits target.
The virtual host has problem during the boot with recent kernels (sometimes, 
daemons crash, but not always, and not always the same daemon). Here is an example:

After bisecting, the following commit seems responsible:
1d4b4b2994b5fc208963c0b795291f8c1f18becf (x86, um: switch to generic 
fork/vfork/clone)

If the target boot, a simple way to reproduce the problem is to run 'update-grub':

OK...  I think I understand what's going on.  We need asmlinkage_protect
in sys_clone() ;-/  For what it's worth, I really wonder if we ought to
treat that as syscall wrappers - i.e. have SYSCALL_DEFINEx on i386 add
a wrapper that would do asmlinkage_protect itself.  IMO it's the same kind
of thing as argument normalization handled by syscall wrappers - we make
sure that C function plays well with what asm glue is doing and expecting.

Anyway, the following seems to fix the problem here (and yes, I could reproduce
it with your config); could you verify that it fixes things on your setup?
If it does, this sucker should go into mainline and -stable...

Actually, I think we should do it *unconditionally* in the syscall wrappers.

It's up to the architecture code to make asmlinkage_protect() be a
no-op or not, depending on how it does things. Right now I think only
x86 actually defines it, although I suspect there might be others that
should (anybody who passes arguments on the stack and also uses the
stack for save-area).

But in the meantime, I guess I should just take the do_fork() one. Can
I get a sign-off and a changelog?

That's what I mean; sorry for bad wording - should be "use SYSCALL_DEFINEx on
i386, adding a wrapper that would do asmlinkage_protect".  And yes, i386 is
the only architecture that currently has a non-empty asmlinkage_protect(),
so all architecture dependencies would already be taken care of -
SYSCALL_DEFINEx should use asmlinkage_protect() unconditionally.

FWIW, I've just done that and I like the result - only one explicit user of
asmlinkage_protect() is left (ftruncate64()) outside of __SYSCALL_DEFINEx
definition.  However, I suspect that we ought to deal with SYSCALL_DEFINE()
as well and I wonder if we could do it in completely, along with the mess
next to its instances.  Look: the reason why e.g. ftruncate64() can't be
just SYSCALL_DEFINE2(int, fd, loff_t, len) is that
	* __SC_LONG() is going to be too narrow
	* __SC_TEST() will barf on long long in arguments
and both are easily fixed -

them are; the only exception I see is semctl(2) - that sucker has union semun

what we do, but the rest of those guys doesn't have to.  How about the
following (completely untested):

teach SYSCALL_DEFINEx to do asmlinkage_protect and accept long long

... killing explicit users of asmlinkage_protect() and all but one
user of SYSCALL_DEFINE

Hmm.  Looks like the RightThing(tm) to me.

The thing that stands out that I question the value of that
HAVE_SYSCALL_WRAPPERS thing. Is there any reason we don't just make
all architectures use it? What's the downside? I'm not sure I see the
point of the non-wrapper version.

Neither do I, to be honest.  It might be saving us a few cycles on
some architectures, but I'd like to see examples of that.  amd64
doesn't seem to be one, at least...

FWIW, there's another bit of ugliness around that area - all these
#define __SC_BLAH3, etc., all of the same form.  This stuff begs for
something like

I think that the inlining of the body should make it basically be
pretty much free even on architectures that would want to do something
about the casts.

.. and thinking about it, the architectures that do actually generate
code for casting to a narrower type should already have selected that
HAVE_SYSCALL_WRAPPERS option anyway, so the only reason *not* to
select it is for a n architecture that doesn't generate any extra
code.

And right now, that HAVE_SYSCALL_WRAPPERS does make it much harder to
think about the header file changes.

Well, I can see both sides. The above is the nice and dense
declaration model with less duplication, but christ, it's hard for
people to wrap their minds around unless they've seen it a million
times. It really does take some getting used to, and the long-form can
be easier to understand.

That said, we have so many of those things now when it comes to the
syscall stuff that the dense form seems to be called for just to be
consistent.

So go wild if you have the energy for it. I'm not going to pull that
for 3.8, though.

No, that's obviously next cycle fodder, along with the sick tricks for
generating compat wrappers on s390 if Martin can live with those.

BTW, grep for asmlinkage; it's amazing how much cargo-culting is going
on with it ;-/  Some of the instances are syscalls yet to be converted
to SYSCALL_DEFINE<n>; even more of COMPAT_SYSCALL_DEFINE<n>-to-be.  We
also have a bunch of declarations in syscalls.h and compat.h - those
are fine.  _Some_ of the rest might be legitimate - ia64 and i386 have
non-trivial asmlinkage expansion and some (but not all) of arch/{x86,ia64}
instances do make sense.  Not all of those - e.g. things like
FPU_divide_by_zero() have no business being regparm(0); they are only called
from C code and forcing their arguments on stack is a pure pessimization for
no reason whatsoever.  Everything else in arch/* is magic green marker,
AFAICS...

There are some borderline cases - e.g. I'm not sure if having sys_recv
done *not* via SYSCALL_DEFINE() is deliberate; it might cut down on
some overhead (the sucker's calling sys_recvfrom(), which does normalizations,
which make normalizing in sys_recv() pointless).  OTOH, sys_send *is*
done as SYSCALL_DEFINE, even though it ends up calling sys_sendto()...

OK, there is one problem - SYSCALL_ALIAS() is as arch-dependent as
cond_syscall().  As far as I can tell, with cond_syscall() we have
the following variants:
	1) alpha, mips
.weak foo
foo = sys_ni_syscall
	2) itanic, ppc
asmlinkage long x (void) __attribute__((weak,alias("sys_ni_syscall")))
	3) very common - most of the architectures
.weak foo
.set foo sys_ni_syscall
	3a) blackfin, h8300 - same as (3), except that asm symbols get
underscore prepended.
.weak _foo
.set _foo _sys_ni_syscall

For SYSCALL_ALIAS(foo,bar):
	1) alpha, mips
foo = bar
.globl foo
	2) ppc64
.globl foo
.set foo bar
.globl .foo
.set .foo .bar
[note that ppc64 cond_syscall ends up generating similar pair, only with
.globl replaced with .weak]
	3) s390, sparc, tile
.globl foo
.set foo bar

I suspect that (3) here should cover the same things as (3,3a) for
cond_syscalls(), with the same "prepend _" variation on blackfin/h8300.
I really wonder what's going on with ppc64, though - as far as I can
tell, .foo is the real function there, while foo is a OPD entry refering
to it.  Do we have anything similar on other architectures?  And what
about itanic?  After looking at the assembler generated by cond_syscall
there, I suspect that
foo# = bar#
.globl foo#
would be the right answer there, but I'd really like somebody familiar with
ia64 to confirm that...

Another question: what's the following comment from spu_callbacks.c about?
 * 4. They are optional and we can't rely on them being
 *    linked into the kernel. Unfortunately, the cond_syscall
 *    helper does not work here as it does not add the necessary
 *    opd symbols:
 *      mbind, mq_open, ipc, ...
What isn't added?  sys_ni_syscall is an OPD entry and weak aliases for it
*are* created.  That comment predates the conversion of cond_syscall()
definition to the current one; it used to be
.weak .foo
.set .foo .sys_ni_syscall
and that wouldn't have created the second alias; is it simply obsolete?
Note that mbind and friends still are not available to SPU; should that
be changed now that we can do that?

I've tried to sanitize cond_syscall/SYSCALL_ALIAS situation; the tree is in
git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/signal experimental-syscalls
NOTE: this is absolutely untested and might very well blow up

Looking at "consolidate cond_syscall and SYSCALL_ALIAS declarations",
is it worth having the default __SYMBOL_NAME declaration in
include/linux/linkage.h make use of CONFIG_SYMBOL_PREFIX?

E.g. in the metag patchset we currently have the patch below.

Admittedly CONFIG_SYMBOL_PREFIX is a string which would make it's use in
SYMBOL_NAME a bit awkward.

Subject: [PATCH v3 02/44] asm-generic/unistd.h: handle symbol prefixes in
 cond_syscall

Some architectures have symbol prefixes and set CONFIG_SYMBOL_PREFIX,
but this wasn't taken into account by the generic cond_syscall. It's
easy enough to fix in a generic fashion, so add the symbol prefix to
symbol names in cond_syscall when CONFIG_SYMBOL_PREFIX is set.

Yes, I think that is correct, it was fixed years ago when the old
toolchains that couldn's support it got deprecated, in

We could certainly change it, if someone is willing to go through the
list and mark the ones that should be added. It's probably not necessary,
I have never seen any SPU application that actually did any but the most
basic syscalls itself.

Umm...  TBH, I simply followed the existing macro (from h8300), but I really
suspect that it's better than your approach - sure, you leave populating the
syscall table to cc(1) and generally have fewer things in asm glue, but
you still have things like _clear_page, _ip_fast_csum, ___ashldi3, etc.
Having a macro converting C identifier to asm one might be a win for such
situations; if nothing else, it helps with grep - blackfin is a constant
source of annoyance, since e.g. git grep -n -w do_notify_resume will miss
things like
        pseudo_long_call _do_notify_resume, p5;

I'm not saying that SYMBOL_NAME is particulary good as identifiers go,
but the functionality is more useful than CONFIG_SYMBOL_PREFIX, IMO...

One question here: Is there still a reason why we can't use method 2 on
all architectures now? The comment in a lot of architectures says

 * What we want is __attribute__((weak,alias("sys_ni_syscall")))
 * but it doesn't work on all toolchains, so we just do it by hand

and my guess is that all toolchains we support at this point actually
do allow it, and turn it into the appropriate assembler syntax.
