Was the info Andrew supplied helpful to you?

Maybe I am missing something but can't you just apply these patches on a
recent kernel?

So, the discussion stalled, but I think the series is fine as is? If
someone disagrees, please speak up. I want to apply patch 1 to
for-current soon and the others to for-next, too.
