Hi Linus,

Andrew and I decided to drop the patches implementing your suggested
rename of the probe_kernel_* and probe_user_* helpers from -mm as there
were way to many conflicts.  After -rc1 might be a good time for this as
all the conflicts are resolved now.

Feel free to directly apply these patches.

Ok, locally applied to a separate branch, will merge once I've done
more testing.

HOWEVER.

As I applied this, I noticed that we have a lot of code of the pattern

        copy_from_kernel_nofault(&x, y, sizeof(x));

which is just an inconvenient and less readable way to write that

        get_kernel_nofault(x, y);

Also, some of the places that *do* use get_kernel_nofault() seem
questionable, and use a cast on 'x'.

I'm actually a bit surprised that we don't even get a warning for that
horrible pattern that smells a bit like the gcc 'cast as lvalue'
thing.

Oh, it's because I once again got confused by the naming.

"get_kernel_nofault()" doesn't have the "get_user()" semantics despite
being written like it. The arguments are in the reverse order, and the
pointer cast is on the address, not the target.

It's more obvious in the code, but not when grepping for things and
being used to the (much MUCH more common) get_user() semantics.

I really think get_kernel_nofault() should reverse the order of
arguments, because right now that "[PATCH 3/3] maccess: rename
probe_kernel_address to get_kernel_nofault" is really really
confusing.

You rename the function to look and act like get_user() (except for
kernel accesses, of course), but you leave it with an argument order
that is very much the reverse of what get_user() has.

So no. I won't be merging this series after all.

So I've merged this renaming now, together with my changes to make
'get_kernel_nofault()' look and act a lot more like 'get_user()'.

It just felt wrong (and potentially dangerous) to me to have a
'get_kernel_nofault()' naming that implied semantics that we're all
familiar with from 'get_user()', but acting very differently.

But part of the fixups I made for the type checking are for
architectures where I didn't even compile-test the end result. I
looked at every case individually, and the patch looks sane, but I
could have screwed something up.

Basically, 'get_kernel_nofault()' doesn't do the same automagic type
munging from the pointer to the target that 'get_user()' does, but at
least now it checks that the types are superficially compatible.
There should be build failures if they aren't, but I hopefully fixed
everything up properly for all architectures.

This email is partly to ask people to double-check, but partly just as
a heads-up so that _if_ I screwed something up, you'll have the
background and it won't take you by surprise.

The powerpc changes look right, compile cleanly and seem to work
correctly.
