When I boot my PC the kernel (2.4.18) gets loaded fine but somehow it
crashes at the line saying
Freeing Unused kernel memory: 220K freed.
nothing happens afterwards and when I reset my system it'll boot up
normally again
This does only happen when my pc has been turned of for some time.
It happened on several previous kernels too, but not with 2.4.5 can
someone help me out ?

My .config:

I don't expect it to be a memory problem my system is really stable and
the weirdest about the problem is that it only happens the first time I
boot up after my pc has been turned off for a while and there are no
problems when i boot 2.5.1 it only crashes on shutdowns on that kernel.
I have tried updating all kind of things, but noting seems to work

Thanks for your reply

Is Nick's system based on a Tyan TigerMP mobo with 2 cpu ?
I have the same kind of problem.

My TigerMP based system is very unstable the first 5 minutes
I use it, and then become as stable as I can expect.

I suspect my power suply to be picky about temperature and cannot
deliver the needed power when it is cold. It is an enermax 350W

Is your "for a while" >= ten seconds? Nothing in CPU/RAM can survive
that long.

I'd say this is a hardware problem then. Something in your box does not like
to be cold.

Yes much longer, more like for ever... Is there a way to find out what
is causing it other then removing each piece of hardware one by one ??

No it just an average board with an i815 chipset

I've tried to do the break thing and then boot after 2 minutes, but the
problem remains. Is it passible that due to the HW-reset some device
gets resetted too and works fine afterwards ???

Sorry for the long time without responding but I haven't had any time lately
I'm not sure how to solve it yet I don't know about that ECC mem problem
but are there any other devices for which this is typical behaviour or
even some BIOS setting which may cause this

ECC memory must be written to ensure the ECC bits are in a consistent
state but that should just take a second or two.

Electronics stores sell freeze spray, gets things cold enough to form frost.
Made for exactly this kind of thing.
