* PROBLEM:  2.4.20 os hang when accessing local ide harddrive

[1.] One line summary of the problem:
entire 2.4.20 operating system hangs when accessing ide hard drive

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
my root file system is on /dev/sda3.  i have /dev/hda1 & /dev/hdd1 
mounted on /u01 & /u02 respectively with ext2 filesystems on everything. 
  occasionally, i will try to access something on one of these 
filesystems and the entire operating system will freeze.  this includes 
the kde xwindows environment as well as ssh sessions that have no open 
file descriptors on /u01 & /u02.  when this happens, i notice the 
machine's ide hard drive light is stuck on...no flashing...just on 
solid.  when this typically happens, the machine will have been idle for 
a long time but all process not touching /u01 & /u02 are working just 
fine.  after one of these hangs happens and i reboot the machine, then 
accessing the ide hard drives works just fine.

i *do* believe the root problem involves hardware...however, i expect 
that the hanging behavior should be limited to only the processes trying 
to access the ide hard drives and not the ones that have been running 
fine off the root scsi drive.  similarly, i've seen this once before on 
a completely different machine where there was some problem with the 
floppy in the floppy drive.  again, the entire machine hung in that 
instance.

i built the kernel using the standard tools from a stable debian woody 
installation.  the full 2.4.20 source was downloaded from kernel.org.

no patches applied.
debian version has been upgraded to sarge and the latest kde.  however, 
the kernel was built before that upgrade using debian woody.

no workaround.

i boot from floppy using syslinux.
there is a windows 2000 installation on the scsi drive which the machine 
will boot into if i do not use the floppy.  i haven't used the windows 
2000 installation in about 5 months.

i will be upgrading the root filesystem to ext3 (to lessen the chance of 
system hangs from corrupting the root filesystem) but leaving the ide 
hard drives on ext2 if that helps debug the problem.

it would be my pleasure to help debug this in anyway that i can.  i love 
linux and look forward to my chance to help out.

whoops...looks like this made it to linux.kernel according to google.  i
thought i was emailing a moderator with whom i'd elaborate further about
the problem :)

what i did not mention in the first posting is that the processes that
do not touch the "frozen drive" continue to work fine for a couple of
minutes before the entire machine freezes including those that do not
use the "frozen drive".  in fact, the machine works great so long as i
avoid the frozen drive.  accessing the idle ide drives is the catalyst
which initiates the eventual machine hang.

the hang can start by trying to list a directory on the ide drive.  once
that happens, the ls process cannot be killed.  if i try to strace the
ls process, then the strace process also becomes hung and unresponsive
to control-c.  i'm not sure why, but eventually the machine will hang
including those processes that do not access the ide drive.  in fact,
when my oracle database is down, there is nothing that accesses the ide
drives.  the database is normally down since it's a test instance.

i've noticed 2 ways that the ide drives freeze.
1. after the machine has been idle all night, i'll go take a look at the
ide filesystem and the hang will begin.
2. while doing an installation to the ide drive which writes about 2gb
of data, the drive will hang eventually.

i do not doubt that faulty hardware could be involved.  i tried changing
the harddrive which resulted in basically the same failure...just
delayed some.  it's also possible that the drive's hardware problem
triggers a more general hardware failure which involves the
motherboard/cpu/memory, etc in which case i would fully expect the
machine to hang like it does.

on a related note, i had seen a similar "drive hangs and soon after all
processes stop responding" problem on a different machine (completely
different hardware) when i tried to mount a floppy.  on this 2nd
machine, that one hang is the only time that it ever happened.  the
first machine will hang with relatively predictable frequency.

i only raise this issue from the perspective of a production server
where partial service availability might be desireable until a planned
service outage could be scheduled to service a faulty drive.

if this case is at all interesting to pursue, then i would be happy to
help out debugging it with guidance.

I am having some hangs with the 2.4.20 kernel without isolatting the source
of the trouble.

Is there any strange message at /var/log/message ? How do you concluded that
is the IDE drive ?

In my linux box, it halts without any clue of what is going on. First I
thank that the trouble was with AIC7xxx and SCSI drives, because of a
correlation of large I/O and linux halt, but after a big help from Justin
Gibbs, when I upgraded the AICxxx module to the newer, the system hangs
without the old message: Locking max tag count...

Hi Roberto,

Here is more information from a test i did a minute ago:
1. i just started the machine, mounted a directory from another system 
which has a very large tar file, and then i untarred it to the ide drive 
mounted on the scsi root drive.  this was done on the first console screen.
2. after a couple of minutes, the untar stops writing to the screen.  i 
notice that the case-hard-drive-light is stuck on.
3. i was tailing /var/log/message in another window over ssh from 
another machine.  nothing happened in that screen.  i exited the tail 
and checked if anything was written to syslog.  notice that at this 
point, i think the ide harddrive is frozen yet i am still able to run 
commands like i would expect.
4. on the console, i log in on the 2nd console screen and try to startx. 
  this hangs and does not respond to control-c.
5. in my ssh window, i try df -k.  now, this hangs and ignores control-c.
6. i try to start another ssh window...this no longer works and just hangs.
7. at this point, i reboot the machine.

on a related note, i have yet a 3rd machine to experience this type of 
hang just this morning.  it is running the exact same kernel from the 
first machine...compiled from the 2.4.20 sources.  in this scenario:
1. i was running xmms and listening to internet radio (live365 of course :)
2. in a ssh window, i changed directories to an ide drive (mounted on 
another ide drive this time.)
3. i tried to lists the contents of a file and noticed that it hung.  at 
that point, i noticed that x windows was frozen and the sound was 
looping.  i didn't have my head phones on at the time the problem 
started so unfortunately, i cannot positively say that listing the file 
caused the entire system to hang but that is my gut feel.
4. this system had been up for weeks.  the root file system was 
definitely active in that time frame, but the mounted ide drive was idle 
  for at least a week before i tried to access that file.  also, i saw 
that the case-hard-drive-light was stuck on just like in the first 
problem that i reported.
5. i checked and there was nothing in messages nor syslog at the time of 
the hang.

if it is related, the other machine that hung happened after mounting 
and unmounting some floppies.  that was also on 2.4.20, debian 
woody...but built separately from the other 2 machines.
