* [GIT PULL for 2.6.37-rc1] V4L/DVB updates @ 2010-10-27 14:32 Mauro Carvalho Chehab 2010-10-27 15:30 ` Jiri Slaby 2010-10-27 17:39 ` Hans de Goede 0 siblings, 2 replies; 12+ messages in thread From: Mauro Carvalho Chehab @ 2010-10-27 14:32 UTC (permalink / raw) To: Linus Torvalds Cc: Andrew Morton, Linux Media Mailing List, Linux Kernel Mailing List Linus, Please pull from ssh://master.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mchehab/linux-2.6.git v4l_for_linus For the changes we have for 2.6.37. This covers lots of fixes, cleanups and improvements at the existing drivers. It also ports almost all remaining V4L1 drivers to V4L2 and move a few obsolete drivers to staging, as we don't have any means to test them if migrating them to V4L2, and such changes aren't trivial. As usual, there are several new IR, frontend and video devices added in this series. Thanks! Mauro --- The following changes since commit f6f94e2ab1b33f0082ac22d71f66385a60d8157f: Linux 2.6.36 (2010-10-20 13:30:22 -0700) are available in the git repository at: We need to fix that issue with af9015, but, without this patch, cx231xx is broken, as it doesn't accept more than 4 bytes per I2C transfer. I tested the patch here with some possible restrictions for I2C size. Also, Mkrufky tested it with other different hardware. What I don't understand is that the only change that this patch caused for af9015 is to change the I2C max size that used to be 16. The patch I sent you reverted this behaviour, by using the proper macro value, instead of a magic number, but you reported that this didn't fix your problem. So, we need to figure out what af9015 is doing different than the other patches, and add patch the issue with af9015. It shouldn't be hard to fix. I'll keep working with you in order to solve the issue, although I don't have any af90xx hardware here, so, I need your help with the tests. Cheers, Mauro. ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 12+ messages in thread

Hi Mauro, Have you looked at the code for how the Conexant guys got the xc5000 firmware load to work (which uses 64 bytes at a time). I suspect what *really* needs to happen is that needs to be made generic so that the stop bit is properly set (which would allow a single i2c transaction to span across multiple USB control messages). Note that the xc5000 hack is actually two changes merged together - one uses a GPIO mode in certain cases to handle clock stretching properly (which probably has to stay there for now), and the other allows for larger i2c transactions. I am referring to the latter change. If we fix the cx231xx i2c master, then we can go back to the original 18271 config, which avoids the risk of regression for other devices. Adding mkrufky to the CC: on this, since he is the 18271 maintainer. Devin -- Devin J. Heitmueller - Kernel Labs http://www.kernellabs.com ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 12+ messages in thread

The original code is broken, as it doesn't properly honour a max size of 8. Even if we do some optimization at cx231xx, we still need to fix the tda18271 code, as it is trying to use more than 8 bytes on some writes. Also, as you noticed, the way cx231xx sends large firmwares to xc5000 is a hack: it requires to identify that the I2C device is a xc5000 and do an special treatment for it. We may actually move all those small_i2c logic to the bridge drivers, adding those hacks inside the I2C adapter part, but this means that they'll need to have some complex-logic that are dependent on what device is connected to it, damaging the benefits that the I2C bus abstraction brings. Instead of polluting bridge drivers with I2C-device specific code, the proper way seems to use parameters to adjust the maximum size, eventually flagging the broken messages in a way that the I2C adapter won't sent a stop transaction in the middle of a larger initialization like this one. Yes, it does currently only get run if it's an xc5000, but I believe that code path could be used for *all* devices. There is no reason that it needs to be a hack as that behavior should be the default case (presumably Conexant just didn't want to retest against other devices). Devin -- Devin J. No. Previously, the init_regs were manually breaking the 0x39 register initialization on several calls to tda18271_write_regs(). What the patch did were to move the logic of breaking the data into smaller groups to happen inside tda18271_write_regs(). So, while the old logic broke it on 3 writes, being the first one from registers 0x00 to 0x0f, the second from 0x10 to 0x1f and the third from 0x20 to 0x27, the new code breaks it inside tda18271_write_regs(). The old logic is broken, since there are some parts of the code calling tda18271_write_regs() with a size that were bigger than the maximum supported size. If you take a look at the code, before this patch, you'll see places where more than the maximum allowed size is used. For example: http://git.linuxtv.org/media_tree.git?a=blob;f=drivers/media/common/tuners/tda18271-common.c;h=e1f678281a58d327752dfcf24dc72ccf1d93ff79;hb=1724c8fa7eb33d68898e060a08a8e6a88348b62f#l385 The driver is wring 11 values: tda18271_write_regs(fe, R_EP3, 11); This doesn't honor the max size of 8 bytes, if small_i2c = TDA18271_08_BYTE_CHUNK_INIT. My patch basically did: 1) it moved the logic that restricts the maximum size to be inside tda18271_write_regs(); 2) it added a new max size of 4 bytes; 3) It renamed the magic values associated with small_i2c. Basically, af9015 broke due to (3), as .small_i2c = 1 means nothing. It should be using .small_i2c = TDA18271_16_BYTE_CHUNK_INIT, instead. What I don't understand is why a patch doing this change didn't fix the issue. Please test the patch I posted on the original -next thread. Let's try to identify why tda18271_write_regs() is not breaking the data into smaller writes. Cheers, Mauro ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 12+ messages in thread

It helps, but one needs to unplug and replug the device. So care to respin the pull request with the patch included? thanks, -- js ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 12+ messages in thread

Yes, this is sometimes needed on some hardware: when a longer or wrong I2C transaction is received, the hardware simply stops working. You need to replug it for it to return to life. Ok, I'll add the patch that changes it to .small_i2c = TDA18271_16_BYTE_CHUNK_INIT to the series. Thanks, Mauro. ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 12+ messages in thread

All of them are bug fixes except for the xirlink_cit button support which makes changes to a driver new this cycle, so no chance for causing regressions there. Before posting patches upstream, I send them to Linux-next in order to be tested there for a while, before sending pull requests upstream. So, yes, patches sent me recently will need to wait for the next series of patches. I can't tell you in advance if I'll merge them for rc2, as I didn't review them yet, and I'll be travelling abroad next week for LPC/KS, but bug fixes need to be addressed and merged in time for 2.6.37. Cheers, Mauro. ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 12+ messages in thread
