Hi,

This is the forth version of this driver. V3 could be found here [1].

Changes since v3.

- Addressed review comments from Hartmut Knaack and Mark Rutland:
  Better description of 'reg' property.
Add # to address-cells and size-cells DT document.
Dropped interrupt-names property, it was not actually used by driver.
DT header file, which contain channels names definitions, is part of
  documentation patch now.
Clarified 'qcom, decimation' property. Hopefully it make sense now.
Make more explicit that all reference channels configuration nodes have
  to be defined in DT.
- Promote dev_dbg to dev_err in error paths. Stan, I hope you are ok with this :-)
- Use 32 bit calculations in calibration routine.
- Read ADC result with one regmap call.
- Show status and state registers if ADC conversin fails. Errors should not
normally happen, so I will like to see content of this registers in such cases.
- Use new struct iio_info::of_xlate for channel number translation.
- Removed device wakeup initialization code, which didn't make sense to me
  for such kind of device.

Patches depend on "iio: inkern: Add of_xlate function to struct iio_info" patch,
which is included in IIO testing branch [2].

+Qualcomm's SPMI PMIC voltage ADC
+
+SPMI PMIC voltage ADC (VADC) provides interface to clients to read
+voltage. The VADC is a 15-bit sigma-delta ADC.
+
+VADC node:
+
+- compatible:
+ Usage: required
+ Value type: <string>
+ Definition: Should contain "qcom,spmi-vadc".
+
+- reg:
+ Usage: required
+ Value type: <prop-encoded-array>
+ Definition: VADC base address and length in the SPMI PMIC register map.
+
+- #address-cells:
+ Usage: required
+ Value type: <u32>
+ Definition: Must be one. Child node 'reg' property should define ADC
+ channel number.
+
+- #size-cells:
+ Usage: required
+ Value type: <u32>
+ Definition: Must be zero.
+
+- #io-channel-cells:
+ Usage: required
+ Value type: <u32>
+ Definition: Must be one. For details about IIO bindings see:
+ Documentation/devicetree/bindings/iio/iio-bindings.txt
+
+- interrupts:
+ Usage: optional
+ Value type: <prop-encoded-array>
+ Definition: End of conversion interrupt.
+
+Channel node properties:
+

+ Usage: required
+ Value type: <u32>
+ Definition: ADC channel number.
+ See include/dt-bindings/iio/qcom,spmi-vadc.h
+
+- qcom,decimation:
+ Usage: optional
+ Value type: <u32>
+ Definition: This parameters is used to decrease ADC sampling rate.
+ Quicker measurements can be made by reducing decimation ratio.
+ Valid values are 512, 1024, 2048, 4096.
+ If property is not found, default value of 512 will be used.
+
+- qcom,pre-scaling:
+ Usage: optional
+ Value type: <u32 array>
+ Definition: Used for scaling the channel input signal before the signal is
+ fed to VADC. The configuration for this node is to know the
+ pre-determined ratio and use it for post scaling. Select one from

+ from the ADC that is an average of multiple samples. The value
+ selected is 2^(value).
+ Valid values are: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512
+ If property is not found, 1 sample will be used.
+
+NOTE:
+
+Following channels, also know as reference points channels, are used for
+result calibration and their channel configuration nodes should be defined:
+VADC_REF_625MV and/or VADC_SPARE1, based on PMIC version, VADC_REF_1250MV,
+VADC_GND_REF and VADC_VDD_VADC.
+

+
+	/* VADC node */
+	pmic_vadc: vadc@3100 {
+		compatible = "qcom,spmi-vadc";
+		reg = <0x3100 0x100>;

The voltage ADC is peripheral of Qualcomm SPMI PMIC chips. It has
15 bits resolution and register space inside PMIC accessible across
SPMI bus.

The vadc driver registers itself through IIO interface.

Hi Ivan,

Couple of utterly tiny bits inline. The biggest one is that
you store some info about the calibration that you never actually
use... Left over from some debugging perhaps?

As dy is always equal to vref-gnd you could drop it and use those
directly...

Conversly you store vref or grnd and never use them...

This looks more or less fine to me. One probable typo inline.

As Mark was kind enough to review the earlier version I'd like
to let it sit for a while to see if he has time to have another look
(perhaps at v5 with the trivial bits fixed up!)

Good point on grnd, but vref is set but never read anywhere that I can find..

Right. At this point it is not used. Driver right now provide basic per
channel voltage measurements. The plan is to add temperature compensation for the
measurements and additional scaling functions which are specific per channel.

I could drop this field from initial driver version if you like.

Ivan

Probably best as otherwise some compiler in a clever mood will give
a warning and I'll get an irritating patch to remove it!

Reviewing again, I got the feeling that due to the complexity of adc reads (writing to register to start conversion, waiting a decent time for the conversion to complete, reading the result), it would be beneficial to use a mutex in vadc_read_raw or its depending functions.
Also, I would want to double-check that the CPU in this type of chips is little endian.
Besides that, a few minor issues inline.

Since vadc->base is u16, shouldn't res be u16 as well? Also think about naming it reg, as this is the property name in DT.

For u16, there would be of_property_read_u16().

Just return ret here?

Hm, yes, but there is such a nice info_exist_lock :-) in core functions,
which in practice serve the same purpose.

Yes, it is.

Yes, but #address-cells for the node is 1, so I would like to keep it 32 bits.

I am usually trying to follow these recommendations[1]. In practice driver
core cares only for EPROBE_DEFER, ENODEV and ENXIO, while of_property_read_u32()
can return ENODATA and EOVERFLOW, which did't not make sense for the core.

Thank you,
Ivan

Please point me in the right direction on this one, too. It is pretty common to pass error codes up, as it is also mentioned in [1].
Yet, this thread in [1] seems more like a draft to me, as Greg K-H wrote in the end: "Fair enough, care to respin this and send it out to me for review?"

I am referring to info_exist_lock mutex part of struct iio_dev.
It protects all operations inkern.c, no?

Yes, I know that is common to just pass error codes up, but in this case it did't
make too much sense, I think. Also take a look at realy_probe() and line 343.

Yes, but it make sense to me.

This doesn't convince me. Actually, within the probe_failed part, it just doesn't care about ENODEV and ENXIO as long as debug messages are disabled (which apart from some developers, is default for the vast majority of devices). For all other error codes, it will at least print an info or warning about what's going wrong (and that can be a lot of help for debugging).

I was wondering, is there a plan to improve this part of the code?
I mean to remove per device lock and use something like try_module_get(),
when clients are acquiring reference to iio channel?
