It's the weekend, the time when busy servers get upgraded without
annoying the users. I was just congratulating myself on an upgrade to
2.6.36 with only a few problems (the NFS -ESTALE bug I have yet to
localize, and a watchdog bug causing constant reboots which may well be
the fault of the daemon), despite my pushing my luck by doing it on
Halloween.

But then, an hour or so after reboot, the server dropped off the net
without warning, while it was idle of anything other than a trickle of
NFS and forwarded web traffic. 'ip link' on the machine itself revealed
that the interface on the e1000e dedicated to the gigabit subnet was in
NO-CARRIER state (the other interface, running a 100Mb/s subnet, was
fine). It was plainly this machine at fault: other machines on the
gigabit subnet had carrier. Pulling the interface down and up again
didn't help: nor did pulling the cable and reinserting it. Only a reboot
cleared it.

The netdev watchdog kicked in, but it wasn't very helpful, telling
me only what I already knew. No other kernel messages were logged
at the time the adapter fell off the net, or for minutes on either
side.

There is a known issue on some systems with ASPM enabled which may cause the device to lose link. If the output of lspci, (which I asked for above) shows ASPM as enabled for the Ethernet devices - make sure to disable it in the BIOS.

It's turned on, indeed. Unfortunately my BIOS provides no obvious way to
turn it off :( I don't really want to turn off ASPM across the whole
system: this box is on all the time but mostly idle at night-time, and
powering down unused hardware seems like an excellent want to save a bit
more power.

This is a problem, L0s and L1 don't work on these adapters, make sure
that the patches to the driver to disable ASPM upon load are in place
and working (by the ASPM value above indicating ASPM Disabled)

The above could be responsible for your issue.  If you don't want to
disable ASPM system wide, then you could just make sure to run a recent
kernel with the ASPM patches, or get our e1000.sf.net e1000e driver and
try it, as it will work around the issue whether or not aspm is enabled.

Ah. That sounds like my problem then :) I must say spontaneous link loss
is a rather nasty failure mode (I suspect the hardware simply forgets to
save its state properly when powering down, am I right? So it comes up
effectively turned off and uninitialized...)

I was planning to simply split up CONFIG_PCIEASPM to allow me to turn
it off for e1000e only, but this sounds a lot less kludgy. :)

(For now, it's probably simplest to just turn ASPM off, as a quick grep
of the kernel tree shows that that machine has no other hardware for
which ASPM would do a blessed thing: in fact, there *is* no other
hardware in 2.6.36 for which ASPM would do a blessed thing: so if the
only workaround is to turn ASPM off for those adapters, for now I might
as well just turn it off completely.)

For the record, cherry-picking ff10e13cd06f3dbe90e9fffc3c2dd2057a116e4b
(the periodic phy-crash-and-reset check) atop 2.6.36 seems to have fixed
it: at least, the machine has been up for a day now without trouble.
This commit doesn't seem to be in Greg's stable-queue yet, but seems
like a good candidate.

It's still rather gruesome that anything like this is even needed, but
as long as it only fires every hour or so I guess I can live with it.
Are there firmware updates or something that might fix this properly in
the end?

This patch should have no effect on your issue if it is indeed ASPM related.
The ASPM issue can be intermittent and I have seen systems run for 3-5 days until the failure occurs, so one day doesn't necessarily rule it out.

BTW - what is the exact make/model of your system (dmidecode).

Interesting. I just noticed that it was testing for exactly the same
symptoms as I was observing (registers suddenly filled with 0xff) and
resetting the card, and thought it might help (plus it's easier than
installing an out-of-tree module and I'm lazy so I tried it first).

It didn't help. Unfortunately, neither did the upstream e1000e-1.2.17
module. I have now seen this network-dead bug with basic 2.6.36, with
2.6.36 plus the commit named above, and with 2.6.36 plus e1000e-1.2.17.

Any debugging I can do, just drop me a line. I'm really quite used to
rebooting this system now, what with this *and* the NFS rpc.mountd-
imploding-on-bootup bug biting simultaneously.
