My new PC oopses during boot running /etc/init.d/kudzu (it gets as far as
writing "Updating /etc/fstab" before it oopses). I've stopped running
kudzu and I can now boot fine.

Unfortunately it's on my home machine--I don't have another one in a fit
enough state to copy the oops data atm, though further data can be
provided upon request. [It freezes hard "not syncing".]

Below is some edited info from the boot messages, and `lspci -vv`:

the config tri-states for the new DRM drivers are screwed. you can not
select any of the individual graphics drivers if the `New 4.1 DRM'
option is selected.

when saving the config, `make xconfig' spits

ERROR - Attempting to write value for unconfigured variable
(CONFIG_DRM_TDFX)

etc for CONFIG_DRM_GAMMA, CONFIG_DRM_R128, CONFIG_DRM_RADEON,
CONFIG_DRM_I810, and CONFIG_DRM_MGA

btw, its nice to see the 4.1 DRM support in your tree.

hi,

before 2.4.7-ac6 i could start loading my linux-kernel mailbox (~22000
messages) in mutt and still have new eterms start up fairly quick.
haven't tried -ac10 yet but you didnt mention any vm changes... in fact
i can't see any in that time at all. might be just subjective of
course, but .... seems interactivity has gone downhill a bit.

the only change i've made recently is switching from ext2 to ext3 when i
booted -ac9. could that be the culprit? vmstat shows about the same old
5MB/sec throughput while opening the mailbox as it did on ext2 (and on
previous kernels), so i'm guessing it isn't...

i just opened up a second instance of mutt and loaded the mailbox in it
too. vmstat says it barely touched the disk at all, and eterms came up
instantly.

Anyone else noticed that with 2.2.19 kernel the value of
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_always_defrag 'floats' if you do masqueraded access
trough the machine.

one can echo it to 1 and then it starts floating anywhere between -4 to 30
(4example)

It's rather annoying when it goes to 0 and NFS traffic just stops
(especially annoying if one had cd burner and no BurnProof drive :>)

root can no longer execute files it does not have access to, e.g.

pluto -# id
uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root)
pluto -# ls -l /sbin/getty
-r-x------ 1 bin bin 32784 Aug 8 06:54 /sbin/getty
pluto -# /sbin/getty
bash: /sbin/getty: Permission denied
pluto -# chmod go+rx /sbin/getty
pluto -# /sbin/getty
pluto -#

Ok thats not quite correct behaviour.

Right. The DAC stuff needs a bit of a different approach then

Ahh,
  Sorry for the ambiguity.
X is 4.1.0 from binaries from XFree86.org for glibc22
3dfx Voodoo 3000 AGP
DRM 4.1
Direct rendering has worked but glxinfo has caused things such as X crash.

Its either or here. You can have the 4.1 kernel modules OR the 4.0
kernel modules. Not both.

What version of XFree are you running?
What video card?
Which version of the drm did you pick (new or old)?
Has the drm worked in this configuration before?
Does the Xserver say that the DRM is enabled?
Could you post the Xserver log?
Could you post a gdb backtrace of the segfault?
Have you run these programs with the environment variable
'LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose'? Is it finding the correct 3d client side driver?

Its kind hard to help someone when they just say things are broken. I
need more information to help you.

Well, I originally did say that I was confused. I understand that some
would like to have the 4.0 as well as the 4.1 option, but with having both
options, I had wondered if the 4.0 code was interferring with the 4.1 code
and causing my segfaults.
Anyway, with ac11 I still get segfaults trying to glxinfo or glxgears.

No, this is not option for "older" DRM but for DRM at all.
The second option is a switch: whether you want new or old DRM driver.

It seems to me it does not contain the old DRM at all.

Umm Linus tree only has DRM 4.1 ?

Okay,
  So from /usr/src/linux I did 'patch -p1 < /yourpatch' , which did not
have any errors, but there is still only one way to get the DRM 4.1 option in
menuconfig (by first selecting the older DRM option).
Linus' pre8 patch fixes it, but then I was unable to get the ext3 patch
to apply cleanly, so I'd rather not go that route until there's another
ext3 patch.

Thanks,

Try the patch I've just send with subject "[PATCH] double DRM - fixes"

I'm confused? I'm unable to select the 4.1 option without first
selecting the original DRM option. Does selecting the 4.1 DRM turn off
the 4.0 code? Or is this why glxinfo segfaults for me now?

The -ac tree lets you build either 4.0 or 4.1 DRM - its a config option -
pick 4.0
