I have had similar problems with integrated AIC7850 on Digital Celebris GL 5133
ST. 2.4.19-pre7 and pre8 only tested so far, no earlier kernels tested at all.
Selecting old adaptec scsi deriver works like a charm.

I had 0x2008 here IIRC. Did not capture the output because this was about the
root partition and I had no serial cable at home. Will capture it with serial
console today.

Interrupts are not getting routed correctly for your motherboard
in the 2.4.19pre release you are running. I'm not sure what has
changed there, but the aic7xxx driver is noticing, when told to
abort a command, that it has already completed, but the interrupt
for that completion was never received. You may see different
results if you play with the APIC I/O option.

This is going to be a problem with mainline, if you could do a binary
search across the 2.4.19pre patches (from pre2 to pre8) that would limit
the bug to a certain diff. thanks,

No need. The 440GX stuff is a known disaster area. You must use APIC support
on those and Intel doesn't want to be helpful on non APIC stuff.
