I hope this reaches the list because all the mail I sent on the weekend seems to have been
lost.

Hi

I got the following oops when I was trying to load alsa drivers on the 2.6.0-test4-mm4
kernel.

ksymoops 2.4.9 on i686 2.6.0-test4-mm3-1.  Options used
     -V (default)
     -k /proc/ksyms (default)
     -l /proc/modules (default)
     -o /lib/modules/2.6.0-test4-mm4 (specified)
     -m /boot/System.map-2.6.0-test4-mm4 (specified)

Error (regular_file): read_ksyms stat /proc/ksyms failed
No modules in ksyms, skipping objects
No ksyms, skipping lsmod

Generally it's best to enable CONFIG_ALLSYMS and not bother running
ksymoops: the kernel does the decode for you.

The problem with ksymoops seems to be that it causes people to not send
important preceding messages. In this case:

		printk(KERN_ERR "kfree_debugcheck: out of range ptr %lxh.\n",
			(unsigned long)objp);

Anyway, you died in kobject_cleanup()'s call to kfree(kobj->k_name), which
was newly added as a part of kobject-unlimited-name-lengths.patch.

Is it repeatable? Exactly which modules were you attempting to load at the
time? And please send your .config.

Thanks.

This is repeatable, each time it tries to load the alsa snd module. Where do you enable CONFIG_ALLSYMS?

OK, it's a straightforward use-after-free in kobject_cleanup().  I snarfed
a patch from Pat which allows arbitrary-length kobject names. Maybe it
wasn't quite ready yet.

t->release points at cdev_dynamic_release(), which frees the kobj.

This should fix it up.

oops, that had a use-after-free as well.

I don't really see a sane way of maintaining kobj->k_name going into
t->release(), so the release() implementations will just have to handle a
NULL kobj->k_name.

Bah, I'm just retarded. It should be something like:

 +	if (kobj->k_name != kobj->name)
 +		kfree(kobj->k_name);
  	if (t && t->release)
  		t->release(kobj);

I'll send you an updated patch shortly, once I get my trees in sync again.
