UML doesn't run on 2.6.24-rc2 as host (config attached). Guest is
2.6.23-mm1, but I guess it's irrelevant. 2.6.23 as host was OK.

When booting there are zillions of lines like this:

"arch_switch_tls failed, errno = EINVAL"

then it finally fails with:

"BUG: spinlock cpu recursion on CPU#0, syslogd/434"

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Miklos

This is PTRACE_ARCH_PRCTL failing and the only EINVAL I see is
do_arch_prctl getting a bogus operation - something other than
ARCH_[GS]ET_[FG]S, which is strange because UML never would have
worked if it were passing in bogus arguments.

Note, this is 32bit UML on 64bit host, to complicate matters. So I
think it's not PTRACE_ARCH_PRCTL, but PTRACE_SET_THREAD_AREA.

Maybe this is a fallout from the x86 architecture merge?

Tglx and mingo cc-d.

Oh, that changes things. In this case, I believe this problem is fixed
by fd181c72a3c202a3986bcee7551c0838265aec2a.

You'll also need f86f9e6d66027bdcdc9b40c06d431ee53ea0d509 for a
separate problem.

> Maybe this is a fallout from the x86 architecture merge?

No, the problems had been there from before the merge - years, in the
case of the second one.

This one fixed the EINVAL messages, and now UML boots, but consumes
100% CPU constantly.

I can't find this in -linus. Which tree is it?

Never seen anything like this until 2.6.24. Strange...

Can you strace it and see if you are seeing zero-length nanosleeps,
and then send me your config file? I've had one other report of this,
but haven't reproduced it here.

My private tree, sorry - I looked at git-log output too quickly. The
patch is below. It's also in -mm.

> Never seen anything like this until 2.6.24. Strange...

It breaks ptrace on 6-argument system calls made by 32-bit sysenter.

commit f86f9e6d66027bdcdc9b40c06d431ee53ea0d509
Author: Jeff Dike <jdike@addtoit.com>
Date: Wed Nov 7 10:40:07 2007 -0500

    From: Chuck Ebbert <76306.1226@compuserve.com>

    [ jdike - Pushing Chuck's patch - see http://lkml.org/lkml/2005/9/16/261 ]

When the 32-bit vDSO is used to make a system call, the %ebp register for
the 6th syscall arg has to be loaded from the user stack (where it's pushed
by the vDSO user code). The native i386 kernel always does this before
stopping for syscall tracing, so %ebp can be seen and modified via ptrace
to access the 6th syscall argument. The x86-64 kernel fails to do this,
presenting the stack address to ptrace instead. This makes the %rbp value
seen by 64-bit ptrace of a 32-bit process, and the %ebp value seen by a
32-bit caller of ptrace, both differ from the native i386 behavior.

This patch fixes the problem by putting the word loaded from the user stack
into %rbp before calling syscall_trace_enter, and reloading the 6th syscall
argument from there afterwards (so ptrace can change it). This makes the
behavior match that of i386 kernels.

Thanks - this reproduces it for me.

BTW, you can work around this by enabling NO_HZ.

Thanks. My other problem is (probably you are aware) that recent -mm
kernels don't compile for UML.

The patch below fixes the build for rc3-mm1 for me.

Yeah, I got as far as that (sorry about the incomplete report), but
then I got stuck on this:

There must be something more to it. I got a clean -mm and it still
does not build after applying the patch. It does have less problems,
but it still won't build. I tried to get it to compile for half an
hour, but considering the amount of sleep I got (and my experience),
there is no surprise that I failed miserably. After fixing the
complaint about a structure not having a 'x86' member, it died in the
linker complaining about stuff relating to rwsem.h.

after applying following changes, the mainline is working for me.

Hi,

I have already mentioned this. Follow this link[1]. ;^)

Can you see if this still happens with rc3-mm1?

I can't reproduce it any more, which gets in the way of debugging it.

nevermind - I had accidentally done a defconfig and turned NO_HZ back
on. With you config put back, I can reproduce this again.

Can you disable NO_HZ and try the patch below, which WorksForMe (TM)?

Yes, it fixes the busy looping for me as well. Thanks!

There's still something strange, as top shows 50% time spent in I/O
wait when UML is running. But ps doesn't show any process in "D"
state.

Can't remember seeing this earlier.
