Hi!

Andi, it seems that you are the right person for this. It looks like my athlon
dies in the __get_user call in __is_prefetch at boot up when bash is used as
init process (look in [2.] for more details).

Just ask for any additional information.

Thanks,

	Matze

[1.] One line summary of the problem:

Oops in __is_prefetch with 2.6.0-test9-bk4 at boot time with AMD Athlon XP
1800+.

[2.] Full description of the problem/report:

I didn't try any 2.5/2.6 kernels for a long time (around 2.5.70). Meanwhile I
upgraded to Suse 8.2.
When I compiled and booted the 2.6.0-test9-bk4 kernel first time, I got the
following:

INIT: version 1.82 booting
INIT: cannot execute "/etc/init.d/boot"
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init

Then, I booted again with "init=/bin/bash" appended. Then the Oops in
__is_prefetch occurs.

[3.] Keywords (i.e., modules, networking, kernel):

kernel, boot, athlon xp, prefetch workaround

[4.] Kernel version (from /proc/version):

2.6.0-test9-bk4

[7.6.] SCSI information (from /proc/scsi/scsi)

Not possible to get the information. Oops at init. From 2.4:

Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
  Vendor: PLEXTOR Model: CD-R PX-W4012A Rev: 1.01
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02

This one uses ide-scsi.

[7.7.] Other information that might be relevant to the problem

My kernel command line:

root=/dev/hda10 hdd=ide-scsi hddlun=0 video=matroxfb:vesa:0x1bb init=/bin/bash

[X.] Other notes, patches, fixes, workarounds:

Nothing, plain kernel. Happened also with vanilla 2.6.0-test9.
.config is attached.

Thank you

Does it go away when you apply the following patch?

I need your config, but the complete config (without the comments dropped)
and without the attachment converted to CR-LF line endings. I just spent several minutes
debugging the extremly cryptic error message from Kconfig you get for that.

Most likely something is reordering the exception table, breaking __get_user.

Short answer: Yes, but it does not help, because now the bash process loops
infinetely. It seems that it just does page faults all the time.

Let me go a little bit more into detail here.

I did also some investigations yesterday and applied the attached debugging
patch to fault.c to get more information.
This is the output (again, read from screen):

----------------------------------------------------
Init: limit: c0000000 instr: 0 eip: 0 seg: 73
0: limit: c0000000 instr: 0
Init: limit: ffffffff instr: c011c1c8 eip: c011c1c8 seg: 60
0: opcode 8a
prefetch: 0

Unable to handle NULL pointer deref...
[Oops from yesterday's mail. Sorry I didn't see the NULL pointer deref line
yesterday. I had to compile with framebuffer support to see it, because
 scrolling with SHIFT-PGUP didn't work.]
-----------------------------------------------------

IMHO, it means, that root cause is somewhere else. The only problem of the
__is_prefetch method is, that it can not deal with instr = 0.
Then it faults in __get_user, (double-fault), enters again __is_prefetch via
do_page_fault, this address (the fault address in first __is_prefetch call) is
handled properly and then the oops is reported as described yesterday.
Applying your init patch seems to cure this problem, but then - as I said in
the beginning - it loops infinitely.

The corresponding printout with debugging looks like this:
Init: limit: c0000000 instr: 0 eip: 0 seg: 73
0: limit: c0000000 instr: 0
prefetch: 0

These three lines repeated all the time (Ok, with the debugging patch only
9 or 10 times).

I added yesterday once the condition (if (!instr) break;) inside the loop,
then it does not oops again, but loops forever instead similar to your patch.

Next, I tried vanilla 2.6.0-test9-mm1. There the same inifinite looping
behavior. I noticed there is also a change in fault.c, which probably has the
same effect. If I provide /bin/bash as init, it loops forever again.

The calls stacks of bash with PID 1, when it loops inifinite, always look
like this:

do_page_fault+0x0/0x583
common_interrrupt+0x18/0x20
do_page_fault+0x0/0x583
do_page_fault+0x0/0x583
do_notify_resume+0x39/0x40
work_notifysig+0x13/0x15

or

common_interrupt+0x?/0x?	// forgot to note the offsets
apic_timer_interrupt+0x?/0x?
do_page_fault+0x0/0x583
do_page_fault+0x0/0x583
error_code+0x2f/0x38

Note that I even tried emacs as init process which worked until I went into
shell-mode, so it seems, that this problem can be triggered most easily with
shells.

At the moment I have no more ideas what to do here...

Sorry, if i have wasted your time. I just wanted to save bandwidth. I don't
know what happened with the attachment. Neither the original nor the
extracted one from my sent-mail folder were in DOS mode.
The complete version is attached now again.

Thanks for your efforts,

	Matze

When the __init patch helps means someone uses an exception table entry
in an __init or __exit function. The linker cannot deal with that and the
exception table ends up unordered, which breaks the exception handling.
That's a bug and needs to be fixed because it will break more than just
__is_prefetch

There are two options:
- Either sort the exception table at runtime
- Or track down the code. The way to track this down (if you want to do this) is to dump
the __ex_table ELF section in vmlinux using objdump. It consists of pairs
of addresses. The first address in the pair should be ordered over the section.
Find the unordered address and decode the second address using System.map. Then fix
that function either dropping the __init/__exit or eliminating the bad entry otherwise.
If you send me your .config in an usable way I can probably do this for you.

Maybe you just have a miscompilation of some sort. Do a make mrproper and try
again. You can also try if it happens with a smaller configuration.

I thought more about this... and looked into Documentation/Changes again
for the compiler version. All the reports at linux-kernel about timings
and kernel image size made me think, that gcc 3.x is no problem anymore.

And it seems that gcc 3.3.2 miscompiles something with my configuration. I
did a quick test using 2.95.3 today in the morning and the bootup seemed
to work.

I'm at work now, but I'll do some more tests tonight.

Sorry, that I've wasted your time, I should have known this.

If anybody is interested to track down the miscompilings, I can provide
any info needed. The least what I can do...

Thanks,
	Matze
