i tried to change cables, location of IDE cards.
anyone met this problem? if so, what is the solution.

Thanks for your help.

Hi

I've been buggered with multiple lockups of an med/heavily loaded 2.4.19
(also rc-series) and same server with 2.4.20. Machine is running
normally for a week or two, then IDE light is lit and processes are
stuck in D state (if any disk activity is required -> freezed process).
I'm using (ide-) software raid 1 and 5, tested with raid 1 alone and
same lockup-problem appears.

So, IDE-light is continuously lit but the disks are not reading nor
writing. Emergency sync nor the unmount is working. I'm guessing the
IDE-code (eh, raid too) might be cause of this.
- No OOM situation have been observed, there's been lots of free ram at
the time of each lockup.
- Processes with no disk activity are not affected (for examples vmstat
1 runs ok if started before lockup)

Currently I'm thinking of falling back to .18 with hopes of no more
problems.

Any similar experiences?

Regards,
Jarmo

PS. An extremely useful feature would be a method to freeze raid resync
until fsck is finished. Now, when both are running at the same time
server's boot speed is miserable.

I thought once I had one, but it was my old reiserfs. This was in Linux
2.4.8 or such, when reiserfs journal recovery drove my drive mad. I kept
looking for a bad block, but there was none. I used a newer reiserfs
release and things went...
But a bad block is still quite likely.

You have a bad block on /dev/hda3

In fact a couple.

Thats the Linux version of the good old "Abort, Retry, Ignore" in DOS when
the disk fails.

Hi .

Hope someone can cast some light on this one as it has been bugging me for a
considerable time now , The Machine is an P III 450 with 192Mb ram , 20Gb
Seagate Hdd for hda , 8.6Gb Seagate for hdb , Liteon DVD Drive on hdc plus
various bits on scsi ,sda 4.3Gb IBM , Tape backup drive.

I am running SuSe 7.3 ,XFree86-4.0.2 , KDE-2.2.2 , Kernel 2.4.19-pre6 , This
is not something that has only happened since i have been running with the
2.4.19-pre series kernels it has also been present running the stock kernels
as supplied with SuSe 7.3 .

Below is the dump of dmesg showing the problems which prevent me doing any
number of disc read/write tasks i have been trying to reverse a kernel patch
and getting I/O write errors , Permission denied when trying to delete files
ect the list goes on .
