Well, here you go :)

I've an AMD based SMP setup w/ Chaintech 7KDD motherboard. It's an older
board, and there are no more recent BIOS updates available for me than
what I'm running. I've tried enabling/disabling legacy USB
keyboard/mouse emulation in the BIOS with no change. I'm using a USB
mouse connected via the OHCI controller in addition to the ps/2
keyboard. If I comment out the handoff code in pci-quirks.c the
keyboard works, even after loading the USB modules. I'm running a ck
based 2.6.15 kernel BTW.

During bootup with handoff code enabled, I do see a message print when
PS/2 gets init'd, and I think it is
"i8042.c: Can't read CTR while initializing i8042", but it scrolls by
too fast so I'm not positive.

lspci and config attached. Anything else you need? Please CC replies
to me, as I'm not subscribed. I tried to CC relevant people involved,
sorry if I missed anyone. Thanks,

-Walt

What happens if you comment out only the OHCI part of the hand-off code,
or only the EHCI part?

Check dmesg to see exactly what that i8042 message says. Are there any
lines reporting handoff problems in ohci-hcd or ehci-hcd?

OK. No lines reporting handoff problems in any of the boots. The only
boot in which I still have a keyboard is when I comment out the OHCI
handoff. I saved dmesg's of all boots, and ran diffs against them. The
uncommented handoffs and the EHCI commented handoff are essentially the
same (where the OHCI handoff code still executes in both). The relevant
(diff'd) sections are:

That's good; you've narrowed it down to the OHCI handoff.

Now try editing the quirk_usb_handoff_ohci() routine. There's the section
enclosed in "#ifndef __hppa__" and the two writel() calls after it. Add
printk statements to see which writes are taking place, try commenting out
some of the writes -- in general, see what makes a difference.

Unfortunately I can't give you any detailed suggestions because I don't
know how the hardware is supposed to work.

My experience is that USB legacy emulation in BIOS + ACPI works as
long as you do not touch it and gets terribly confused if someone
tries to actually use i8042 (like enable active multiplexing mode with
4 AUX ports). As soon as BIOS takes its dirty hands off i8042
 everything works fine.

The problem it seems that when usb-handoff code was moved from pci
quirks and enabled inconditionally something happened so it stopped
 doing handoff.

hi
I experienced same problem, but after complilng latest kernel the problem is
rectified. So I think problem with kernel 2.6.11,13 ..could be rectified by
compiling with a higher version of kernel.

Very good. I suggested this because the PW 380 is a poster child of the
buggy BIOS, and also of industry involvement: Dell fixed the problems
for us. Buy a beer for Matt Domsch.

Here's the original RHEL bug (do not add silly comments or I'll make
it private):
 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=165749

Notice that the bug deals with broken sharing between EHCI and its
companion controller. This is also something a BIOS breaks often.
But you should've seen wild theories people posted about it to Ubuntu
forums, they just crack me up.

Wrong assumption, my BIOS was totally out-of-date. After upgrading to
A04 the problem went away and now everything works fine.

Assuming your BIOS isn't totally out-of-date, what happens if you try
turning off the usb-handoff code and preventing the *hci-hcd.ko drivers
from loading, as described ealier in this thread?

If your keyboard works in that state, what happens when you disable
the handoff code and driver for each one of the drivers, alone?

OK. Prior to trying this, I'd also upgraded udev to 0.79.

Now, on 2.6.14-rt2, PS/2 keyboard works, mouse doesn't if USB is
enabled in the BIOS, regardless of whether or not usb-handoff is
specified on the kernel commandline. However, my "load USB host
controller driver, unplug and re-plug the PS/2 mouse" trick no longer
works on 2.6.14-rt2 -- the only difference I can see being having
upgraded to udev 0.79.

On vanilla 2.6.15, neither PS/2 keyboard nor PS/2 mouse work unless
USB is disabled in the BIOS.

MB is a Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW-P (F5) w/ dual Athlon MP 1900's, BIOS says
it's Award 6.00 something.

2.6.15 .config and lspci -vv output follow (2.6.14-rt2 .config is
largely the same as 2.6.15, minus RT-stuff):

With 2.6.14.6:

serio: i8042 AUX port at 0x60,0x64 irq 12
serio: i8042 KBD port at 0x60,0x64 irq 1

and my keyboard works.

with 2.6.15:

i8042.c: Can't read CTR while initializing i8042.

and no PS/2 keyboard.

This happens on Dell Precision 380, x86_64 kernel with SMP/HT, no options
on kernel command line, same kernel .config (modulo make oldconfig).
I tried all solutions I found on google, none works (beside connecting
USB keyboard or disabling USB in BIOS).

It turned out that a BIOS upgrade fixed the problem, but this doesn't
answer your question.

The problem wasn't an incomplete emulation of the i8042, because when the
USB handoff code was commented out the PS/2 keyboard worked okay. This
means the handoff, when enabled, wasn't being done correctly. That could
be the fault of the USB drivers or the BIOS (or both). We have no way to
tell which, because the users have all switched to the newer BIOS.

It's usually that the BIOS does an incomplete emulation of the i8042
chip, while still getting in the way to the real i8042. Usually GRUB and
DOS don't care about sending any commands to the i8042, and so they
work. The Linux i8042.c driver needs to use them to enable the PS/2
mouse port and do other probing, and if the commans are not working, it
just bails out.

The question of course is why the handoff code doesn't work on that
platform.

This words made me think about upgrading the BIOS. My former version
that caused the problem and made me start this thread was F6 from july
2005 and the most recent version is from december 2005[1]. Using this
BIOS the former problem is gone! Jens who has go the same motherboard
had the same idea and can confirm this "success" with the newer
BIOS. That is to say that I can use the keyboard (and mouse) using the
ps/2 ports with kernel 2.6.15 and enabled "USB keyboard support" in
the BIOS. The keyboard and mouse do also work -- as expected --
conncected to the USB.

Thus, I do not know what you kernel developers should do now. You can
say to the guys who have the ps/2 problem that they should update
their BIOS. But what should they do if their motherboard supplier
has not fixed the problem or does not provide BIOS updates at all?
And what exactly was the problem?

Honestly, I do not want to reflash the BIOS of my motherboard to the
older version for later debugging of modified kernel source code
since a power blackout during flashing the BIOS could destroy my
motherboard...

Kind regards from Martin

Good work! This proves that the i8042 driver _is_ compatible with BIOS
legacy support.

The next step is to find out which part of the USB handoff code isn't
working right. Martin, first try uncommenting just the
quirk_usb_disable_ohci call but leave the modules renamed. That will
indicate whether the problem is in the handoff code or in the driver.

Next, try renaming the ohci-hcd.ko file back to its correct name so it
does get loaded. If the keyboard continues to work then the problem must
lie in either UHCI or EHCI. Try doing the same two-part test (enable the
quirk code and then un-rename the file) with each of them to see exactly
at what point the keyboard stops working.

Yes, I also use the OHCI controller (I guessed that this is
necessary for low speed USB devices...), I commented the calls of
quirk_usb_disable_?hci and renamed the compiled modules so that they
cannot be loaded. Thus, the PS/2 keyboard *does* work with "USB
keyboard support" enabled in the BIOS with kernel 2.6.15. But - of
cource - no USB device does work.

On the other hand, if the BIOS worked correctly then the ps/2 port would
have no problems regardless of whether USB legacy emulation was on or off.
Given that the keyboard works during bootup, I see only two possibilities:

The USB handoff code somehow causes the BIOS to mess up the
	state of the 8042;

The 8042 driver interacts badly with the firmware when USB
legacy emulation is on, and the USB handoff code doesn't
	successfully turn off legacy emulation.

My earlier suggestion was an attempt to test the first possibility. The
second is harder to test because it implies problems in both the 8042
driver and the USB handoff code.

Well, it's not handoff code causing problems per se, it's just that it
does not look like it performs handoff. If it did then disabling USB
legacy emulation in BIOS would have no effect, right?

It would be nice to know which part of the usb-handoff code causes the
problem. In the 2.6.15 source file drivers/usb/host/pci-quirks.c, at the
end of the file is this routine:

static void __devinit quirk_usb_early_handoff(struct pci_dev *pdev)
{
	if (pdev->class == PCI_CLASS_SERIAL_USB_UHCI)
		quirk_usb_handoff_uhci(pdev);
	else if (pdev->class == PCI_CLASS_SERIAL_USB_OHCI)
		quirk_usb_handoff_ohci(pdev);
	else if (pdev->class == PCI_CLASS_SERIAL_USB_EHCI)
		quirk_usb_disable_ehci(pdev);
}

If you comment out the call to quirk_usb_handoff_uhci and rename the
/lib/modules/2.6.15/kernel/drivers/usb/host/uhci-hcd.ko file so that it
doesn't get loaded automatically, does that fix things?

Similarly, if you comment out the call to quirk_usb_disable_ehci and
rename /lib/modules/.../ehci-hcd.ko so that it doesn't get loaded, does
that help?

Leonid's system log showed that he doesn't have an OHCI controller, but if
Martin does then he should do the same test with quirk_usb_handoff_ohci.

Dimitry,

I have the same problem. I have Dell Dimension 380 box,
PS/2 mouse and keyboard.

Kernel worked under 2.6.13.1 and 2.6.14
  Then I upgraded to 2.6.15:
cp linux-2.6.14/.config linux-2.6.15/.config
cd linux-2.6.15
make oldconfig
... and usual kernel compilation ...

Result: system is successfully booted, no error messages, loads X window,
... but both keyboard and mouse are dead: they do not respond.

It was not the first time I have this famous problem. Last time it
was different keyboard, different motherboard, different kernel. That time
your advice to use kernel parameter "i8042.noacpi=1" helped. This time this
does not help. My BIOS setup has an only two choices: to enable USB controller
or to disable it. When I disable USB controller, then after booting keyboard
and mouse are working, but no USB devices work.

Configuration files:

http://lacerta.miz.nao.ac.jp/misc/config_2_6_15.txt (2.6.15 which does not work)

Hello,

Jens Nödler who has got the same motheboard (Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 with
nforce4 chipset) can confirm my problem. But he found out that the
keyboard connected to the ps/2 port does work with kernel 2.6.15 if
"USB keyboard support" is disabled in the BIOS.

Once you've narrowed down what two release kernels are "last one
working" & "first one broken" you can get even closer by doing a git
bisection search between those two to (hopefully) narrow it down to
the exact git commit that broke it.
It's a bit of work, but usually very useful to track down the exact
thing that broke it if nothing else finds the problem :)

But other things do work:
- If I connect the keyboard with the USB, it does work with 2.6.15.
- If I use another pc with an old AMD 500, the PS/2 keyboard does
work.

So, it could be a strange problem between the motherboard chipset
(nforce4), the 2.6.15 kernel and the PS/2 connection.

I am going to test some Kernels beetween 2.6.14.2 and 2.6.15 to find
the problem in some time.

If you have another box, you could ssh in and start X. Or you could start
"showkey", to see if it's a problem (e.g. empty keymap) that kbd introduces
during boot.
Therefore, does keyboard work when you boot with the "-b" option?

Could you please boot with "i8042.debug", then reboot and send me
/var/log/messages or whatever file your syslog dumps kernel messages?

Thanks!

Hi kernel-devs,

[1.]
a keyboard that is connected to to PS/2 port does not work with
kernel 2.6.15. That is to say that no action is seen at the login
promt if I enter any key.

[2.]
I used PS/2 keyboards for a long time with kernels < 2.6.15
like 2.6.14.2, 2.6.13 or 2.6.11.10. I used "make oldconfig" to move
the .config file form 2.6.14.2 to 2.6.15 and answered "no" to every
question¹

The keyboard is pluged the right way since I can walk around in the
lilo menu before the kernel is being loaded. If I choose another
kernel the PS/2 keyboard does work. I can connect to the pc with a
running 2.6.15 from another pc using ssh. Everything looks normal,
there are no strange errors in /var/log/syslog or from the output
dmesg. I can also use the soundcard...

I also tried another keyboard that do work on kernels < 2.6.15 with
no success.

I cannot tell if the PS/2 mouse does not work either since I cannot
start X.
