* dma_timer_expiry on SATA siimage 3112 under 2.6.0-test1-ac1 @ 2003-07-16 21:13 Sam Bromley [not found] ` <bf6nb0$c3$1@main.gmane.org> 0 siblings, 1 reply; 3+ messages in thread From: Sam Bromley @ 2003-07-16 21:13 UTC (permalink / raw) To: linux-kernel; +Cc: linux-ide Good day folks, I am unable to enable DMA on a Maxtor 6Y120MO on Asus A7N8X with a Silicon Image 3112 SATA controller. Specifically, after hdparm -X whatever -d1 /dev/hde I get dma_timer_expiry errors and dma_status=0x21. System becomes unresponsive if access to the drive is attempted, and the errors above repeat continuously. I believe this problem has come up in the past, does a fix exist at this time? I've tried both kernels 2.4.21-ac4 and 2.6.0-test1-ac2. DMA is not enabled on the SATA drive at boot. However DMA is enabled for the PATA CDROM drives, (at least with acpi=off, else the PATA drives are not detected). Below are the related outputs from dmesg and hdparm. I'd appreciate any insight on this issue, and would be happy to help in any way possible. Cheers, Sam. --------------------------- Sam Bromley Engineering Systems and Computing School of Engineering University of Guelph Guelph, ON Canada hdparm -tT /dev/hde: /dev/hde: Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.36 seconds =356.60 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 48.30 seconds = 1.33 MB/sec hdparm -I /dev/hde: /dev/hde: ATA device, with non-removable media Model Number: Maxtor 6Y120M0 Serial Number: Y3JV3FSE Firmware Revision: YAR51BW0 Standards: Supported: 7 6 5 4 Likely used: 7 Configuration: Logical max current cylinders 16383 16383 heads 16 16 sectors/track 63 63 -- CHS current addressable sectors: 16514064 LBA user addressable sectors: 240121728 device size with M = 1024*1024: 117246 MBytes device size with M = 1000*1000: 122942 MBytes (122 GB) Capabilities: LBA, IORDY(can be disabled) Queue depth: 1 Standby timer values: spec'd by Standard, no device specific minimum R/W multiple sector transfer: Max = 16 Current = 0 Advanced power management level: unknown setting (0x0000) Recommended acoustic management value: 192, current value: 254 DMA: mdma0 mdma1 mdma2 udma0 udma1 udma2 udma3 udma4 *udma5 udma6 Cycle time: min=120ns recommended=120ns PIO: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4 Cycle time: no flow control=120ns IORDY flow control=120ns Commands/features: Enabled Supported: * NOP cmd * READ BUFFER cmd * WRITE BUFFER cmd * Host Protected Area feature set * Look-ahead * Write cache * Power Management feature set Security Mode feature set * SMART feature set * FLUSH CACHE EXT command * Mandatory FLUSH CACHE command * Device Configuration Overlay feature set * Automatic Acoustic Management feature set SET MAX security extension Advanced Power Management feature set * DOWNLOAD MICROCODE cmd * SMART self-test * SMART error logging Security: Master password revision code = 65534 supported not enabled not locked not frozen not expired: security count not supported: enhanced erase Checksum: correct dmesg: Linux version 2.6.0-test1-ac1 (root@aura) (gcc version 3.3.1 20030626 (Debian prerelease)) #5 Wed Jul 16 11:26:11 EDT 2003 Video mode to be used for restore is f00 BIOS-provided physical RAM map: BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - 000000000009f800 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000000009f800 - 00000000000a0000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000000f0000 - 0000000000100000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 0000000000100000 - 000000001fff0000 (usable) BIOS-e820: 000000001fff0000 - 000000001fff3000 (ACPI NVS) BIOS-e820: 000000001fff3000 - 0000000020000000 (ACPI data) BIOS-e820: 00000000fec00000 - 00000000fec01000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000fee00000 - 00000000fee01000 (reserved) BIOS-e820: 00000000ffff0000 - 0000000100000000 (reserved) 511MB LOWMEM available. Now this drive should support upwards of udma5. Is it just a matter of the sil3112 driver maturing a bit more then? Or do these protocols no longer really mean anything in the context of SATA? Thank you. *Much* appreciated. New results are below. But I found a solution: I modified ide-iops.c, function ide_ata66_check to return 0, without testing the controller registers. I booted and I issue: hdparm -d1 -u1 -Xudma6 /dev/hda and the speed is 50MB/s, without problems. --- Catalin(ux) BOIE catab@deuroconsult.ro ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 3+ messages in thread
