OK, so here's a new Documentation/Changes file against
2.4.15. Now, with the addition of ext3, we need at least a
recent e2fsprogs. 1.19 should be OK for ext2, but not for
ext3, right ? I included it in the e2fsprogs section. Feel
free to modify accordingly.

Nerijus Baliunas: I renamed GNU Compiler Collection to GNU C.

Dmitri Popov: Do you have a patch for quota-tools ? What's
the minimal requirement ?

The old one I made against 2.4.14 is in the
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-kernel&m=100639925307718&w=2
thread.

PS: Chris, your other e-mail address doesn't work. I removed
it.

Why did you rename Gnu C to GNU Compiler Collection? Only C is used
in kernel compilation, no C++ or fortran. People might think that
whole "collection" is needed.

Perhaps you should add it, then :)

Since we are in Linus's tree, it would just mean mentioning the earliest
version that supports the standard quotas (and has no evil bugs and what
not). You could mention the first version that adds support for 32-bit
quotas I suppose, too.

Thank you for this information. According to documentation, new
quota-tools know about both old and new quota formats, so I don't need to
downgrade now. My personal part of the problem is solved. But I can't
didn't find any information about minimum quota-tools version in
neither Linus's, nor Alan's kernel. Although versions of other utilities
are listed in Changes.

I see, but I think it was sufficient to list the minimal in
"Current Minimal Requirements". Anyway, some URLs don't exist
anymore. I updated them.

The file has always listed the _minimal_ compatible version, not the
latest&greatest. If you are reading the file, it is assumed that you can
find that one on your own...

I believe Alan's tree had 32-bit quota support, which requires a
different version of quota-tools. If you return to Linus's tree, your
original version will work.

For what its worth, Linus has finally merged much of Alan's tree into
his own, and is pretty much done as of 2.4.15-pre. 32-bit quotas were
_not_ merged.

I'd like to note that there is nothing abount quota tools in
Documentation/Changes. I tried to use one of Alan Cox kernels some weeks
ago, and was very surprised, when quota utilities 2.00 stopped working.
And I didn't find any information about correct quota tools in all the
source tree! At last I searched for the latest quota-tools in the Internet
(ftp://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/pub/local/jack/quota/utils/)
and installed it. Now it works. As I can understand, the current 2.4.*
will also need new utilities.

I also tried to mail the maintainer according to MAINTAINERS, but got no
response yet. If someone knows the exact minimum version of quota tools,
it would be good to include that information into the Changes file.

OK, so the e-mail address for Chris doesn't work. Remove it
from the Changes file ? I'm trying the other address.

Hi. I updated several parts of the Documentation/Changes file
(mostly URLs), reformated it to wrap at 72 and also removed all
versions from the URLs, since that usually makes the user
upgrade to a version which isn't the most recent (and
compatible). An exception. GCC includes the full path to
2.95.3, because 3.0.x isn't the recommended compiler.

It's against 2.4.14.

BTW, with the addition of ext3 in 2.4.15pre2, maybe it's time
to require the latest e2fsprogs, 1.25, or include a note
about ext3 requirements ?

For your convenience, I attach both the file and a diff (which
is about 2x the size of the file, but easier to see what
changed...).

PS: Will someone update the README file ? The recommended
compiler in it is egcs 1.1.2, but in Changes GCC 2.95.3.
