Replace the specification of two data structures by pointer dereferences
as the parameter for the operator "sizeof" to make the corresponding size
determination a bit safer according to the Linux coding style convention.

This issue was detected by using the Coccinelle software.

Omit an extra message for a memory allocation failure in this function.

This issue was detected by using the Coccinelle software.

How have you managed to insert 4 patches into the x/17 thread?

It shouldn't matter for reviewing purposes.  It just looks really
odd.
