Hi all,

As some of you already know, the LVFS will be unavailable at 1500 UTC
for several hours on 2020-11-11 to migrate to a new server. We’ve
moving from a single VM in AMS to a scalable modern architecture
managed by the Linux Foundation. The website, user and vendor accounts
will continue to work exactly as before.

User downloads of firmware should be unaffected as we’ll do an
instantaneous DNS cut-over, but you may find your account has been
disabled until the new servers are all online. You might also find a
few minutes of download count logging has been lost during the
transition. The transfer of data should take less than 10 minutes, but
please be prepared that the migration might take up to several hours
to be fully working. If anything goes seriously wrong we’ll reactivate
the old server and abandon the migration. I’ll send another
announcement when we’ve done the cut-over and done all the required
testing.

Again, apologies for the disruption: If the migration goes smoothly
then we’ll have a new scalable architecture that has redundancy across
two datacenters and almost unlimited storage capacity. It also means
we can deploy new LVFS versions daily without the few seconds of
downtime that are sometimes noticed. The professional sysadmin team at
the Linux Foundation can fix problems without everything relying on me
being able to SSH into a server.

We’ve been working on this for a few months, and tested migration more
than once. If something is not working tomorrow after about 1700 UTC
please let me know off list.

Richard
