hello,

i've exhausted my efforts to resolve this so i am sending you this email in hopes you might shed some light on the problem.

i have an onboard r8169 and a secondary pcie r8169 chipset gigabit ethernet adapters.

the link keeps sputtering with constant kernel messages (dmesg) of "link up link down"

the variant of linux is fedora 18 with testing branch enabled and fedora "vanilla" kernel with minimal fedora patchset taken from fedora vanilla kernel repos as instructed on the fedora wiki.

the reason for the development kernel is i hoped with this, this problem would be resolved.

dmesg looks like:

[52857.473520] r8169 0000:03:00.0 p10p1: link down
[52859.763261] r8169 0000:03:00.0 p10p1: link up
[52859.771250] r8169 0000:04:09.0 p8p1: link up
[52917.512992] r8169 0000:04:09.0 p8p1: link down
[52917.534918] r8169 0000:03:00.0 p10p1: link down
[52919.846520] r8169 0000:04:09.0 p8p1: link up
[52919.850411] r8169 0000:03:00.0 p10p1: link up
[53977.329829] r8169 0000:03:00.0 p10p1: link down
[53979.798396] r8169 0000:03:00.0 p10p1: link up
[54087.331434] r8169 0000:03:00.0 p10p1: link down
[54089.730198] r8169 0000:03:00.0 p10p1: link up

etc....

the box serves as a network router so it is causing abundant network traffic problems.

any debugging i could help you with, please let me know.  also if there is a possible solution, please let me know.

kind regards and i wish you the best,

lance lassetter

Is it a regression and / or an Asus M5A97 system ?

The XID lines that the kernel printed when the r8169 module gets loaded
may help.

i don't think it's a regression and it's a Dell XPS 625 with an addon r8169 so there are two r8169 cards in the system. it is a testing fedora repository system though with vanilla mainline kernel.

hope this helps,

sorry for the lack of information thereof:

the conventional processor name is AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 940 Processor

i bought the computer back in like 2008, sorry.

it's an AMD 790FX motherboard chipset for eth0 (r8169i driver)

eth1 is a Roswell RC-404 PCI adapter (r8169 driver)

if regression means it didn't used to happen and now it's happening with a newer Linux OS/kernel then yes. if regression means something different, i'm not sure.

i think it started with my installation of Fedora 18 which began with kernel 3.6 or 3.7, i really can't remember. it might have started with kernel 3.8.

before then all was OK.

hope this helps.

Ueimor,

Any luck with this?

This is not the usual AMD iommu + realtek NIC problem.

This is not the usual "I upgraded from 2.6 and my Realtek NIC stopped working".

This is not "recent Realtek NIC support is wet".

This is not an "old Realtek PCI NIC stopped working" only problem.

This is an AMD box.

May I assume that you used an up-to-date Fedora 17 before migrating to
Fedora 18 when it was published ?

Ueimor,

Yes, it was an up to date Fedora 17. I know this is probably redundant but I also tried Realtek firmware from a Debian Sid box onto the Fedora 18 using testing repos with vanilla stable kernel to the same result.

Should I file a Red Hat bug? Manually change IRQs, what do you think?

Lance

Not yet.

I need the version of the last known working Fedora 17 kernel or
your Fedora 18 install date if you can't retrieve it.

A complete dmesg and the content of /proc/interrupts will be welcome.

Thanks.

Ueimor,

afaik, I think my last FC17 kernel was 3.8.8-100 and the Fedora 18 install date was the week of the Fedora 18 alpha release, afaik September of 2012.

Attached are /proc/interrupts and complete dmesg upon reboot.

HTH,

Lance

The initial FC18 Alpha kernel was 3.6 RC2 Fedora Core kernel.

I've just started using Fedora vanilla repos for kernel just recently; although they are not pure vanilla and do contain a minimal patchset from Fedora.

I've never compiled my own kernel on the machine with the r8169 issue.

Thanks,

Lance

O_o

Did you try Fedora 17 kernels on your Fedora 18 ?

It does not look like a proper r8169 driver problem: almost (...) the same kernel,
different compiler and different userspace.

Ueimor:

Hi! I'm exhausted with this....

Tried Fedora 17 kernels (both Vanilla and stock) on Fedora 18 still same effect. My BIOS is one version behind the latest version, could that be a problem?

What do you think, Ueimor? Maybe faulty motherboard?

I think you should try a post 3.9 kernel including commit
4ada8db38a44654446fe35ceb20a1972220e0f69 ("net: Restore NETIF_F_* bit
ordering.").

Ueimor,

Tried stock 3.10-rc1. Still same problem with alias r8169 alias p10p1 and p8p1 "up down, up down".

Does this kernel inclde your patch? I think it does....

Please reply with suggestions.

Ueimor,

I don't think it's a driver problem as I've tried three separate drivers all to the same effect: link up/link down.

I think it might be Fedora faulty power management orba udev problem. I've modified /etc/udev/70-persisetent-net.rules, let's see what happens.

Thanks,

Lance
