Hi all,

This addresses a couple of issues Will has found with the refcounting of
page-tables at EL2. Patch 01 fixes a nasty bug, and probably wants to go
in -stable. Patch 02 fixes a small inconsistency which made it harder to
find refcount-related bugs at EL2.

Feedback welcome !

Thanks,
Quentin

The KVM page-table library refcounts the pages of concatenated stage-2
PGDs individually. However, the host's stage-2 PGD is currently managed
by EL2 as a single high-order compound page, which can cause the
refcount of the tail pages to reach 0 when they really shouldn't, hence
corrupting the page-table.

Fix this by introducing a new hyp_split_page() helper in the EL2 page
allocator (matching EL1's split_page() function), and make use of it
from host_s2_zalloc_page().

Some of the refcount manipulation helpers used at EL2 are instrumented
to catch a corrupt state, but not all of them are treated equally. Let's
make things more consistent by instrumenting hyp_page_ref_dec_and_test()
as well.

Hi all,

This is v2 of the series previously posted here:

https://lore.kernel.org/kvmarm/20211004090328.540941-1-qperret@google.com/

This addresses a couple of issues Will has found with the refcounting of
page-tables at EL2. Patch 01 fixes a nasty bug, and probably wants to go
in -stable. Patch 02 fixes a small inconsistency which made it harder to
find refcount-related bugs at EL2.

Changes since v1:
 - applied Acked-by from Will;
 - better comment + commit message for patch 01 (Marc).

Thanks!
Quentin

Hi all,

This is v2 of the series previously posted here:

https://lore.kernel.org/kvmarm/20211004090328.540941-1-qperret@google.com/

This addresses a couple of issues Will has found with the refcounting of
page-tables at EL2. Patch 01 fixes a nasty bug, and probably wants to go
in -stable. Patch 02 fixes a small inconsistency which made it harder to
find refcount-related bugs at EL2.

Changes since v1:
 - applied Acked-by from Will;
 - better comment + commit message for patch 01 (Marc).

Thanks!
Quentin

The KVM page-table library refcounts the pages of concatenated stage-2
PGDs individually. However, when running KVM in protected mode, the
host's stage-2 PGD is currently managed by EL2 as a single high-order
compound page, which can cause the refcount of the tail pages to reach 0
when they shouldn't, hence corrupting the page-table.

Fix this by introducing a new hyp_split_page() helper in the EL2 page
allocator (matching the kernel's split_page() function), and make use of
it from host_s2_zalloc_pages_exact().

Some of the refcount manipulation helpers used at EL2 are instrumented
to catch a corrupted state, but not all of them are treated equally. Let's
make things more consistent by instrumenting hyp_page_ref_dec_and_test()
as well.
