Hi.

[cc me in reply]

Works slow (~35kB/s) on kernels 2.6.0-test3 and newer. I can trace this to wol
removal patch. (reloading doesn't help, like in test2 case, see below)

But there's another problem:
On 2.6.0-test2 it works normal, but only when i reload (rmmod/modprobe) the
driver.
After this reloading i can't get it back into "slow" mode even if i use test3 or
newer driver.
One thing to note: when it works ok, i get this in dmesg:
eth0: Setting full-duplex based on MII #24 link partner capability of 0141.

erikm suggested running mii-tool -r eth0, output i get:
# mii-tool -r eth0
SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth0' failed: Operation not supported
# mii-tool
SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth0' failed: Operation not supported
no MII interfaces found

Ok, could you send your .config too, i use the 3c59x driver and haven't
noticed this in 2.6.0-test5-mm4. My card is;

00:10.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c905B 100BaseTX [Cyclone] (rev 30)
00:11.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c905B 100BaseTX [Cyclone]

And when done as root?

zwane@montezuma /tmp {0:1} sudo mii-tool
eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok
eth1: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok

Same dmesg is with the test2 driver, but when i reload test2 driver i get:

Might be relevant... the last line is lagged a couple of seconds, and network

What is your link peer?

I'm also curious as to why mii-tool doesn't work, can you attach an strace
mii-tool eth0?

mii-tool does not work for me either. I thought mine was outdated or something
like that ;)
Oh, kernel is -test6-mm4.

# mii-tool -V
mii-tool.c 1.9 2000/04/28 00:56:08 (David Hinds)

# mii-tool eth0

Not native english speaker, but if "link peer" is the remote end, then this is a
friend's computer. (and a hub is between computers)

just tested this with a RealTek-NIC (8139too), it gives the same message.

I have a number of servers that are disk-bound, and I'm trying to convince
the boss to split out the single disk drive to separate disk drives to
increase I/O throughput. I've been using VMSTAT to show just how
disk-bound we are, but I can't get any traction toward using multiple
drives until I can show a clear, positive, and immediate benefit.

Searching the archives, I didn't see discussion of methods of monitoring
separate parts of a file system, other than building separate partitions
and using /proc/partitions to measure what happens there. This isn't an
option. (There is some political inertia here, as well as a heavy dose of
NIH.)

Any help welcome.

My hypothesis: we need three separate drives, one for OS/code/swap/logs,
one for /home (Web pages, scripts, and user data), and one devoted to
MySQL/PostgreSQL. The "right" way to do the job would be to have the
databases on a completely separate computer, but that's out because of
proprietary-software issues.

You can see the Catch-22.

Put together a single server to try the concept? "Please, you must be
joking, Our servers are working just fine!"

grumble grumble NIH grumble grumble

Satch

Ok in this case it would be the hub, sometimes these aren't the best when
it comes to advertising capabilities.

Also slow on crossover cable, without hub.

Ok, updated to the one that ships with redhat.
Now i get:
eth0: link ok
when it is slow (-test2 module)

and:
eth0: negotiated 100baseTx-FD, link ok
when it is ok (reloaded -test2 module)

Thanks for confirming that.

What does mii-tool -r do?

Doesn't help, neither do -R or -F.

Ok to recap, backing out the WOL change fixes things? If not, can you
isolate which kernel version it is?

Thanks

-after the WOL change... works slow, no matter what i do.
-before the WOL change... works slow, but rmmod/modprobe fixes this.

Will try with drivers from older kernels, when i wake up.

Ok... i woke up :-)

Tried a bunch of 2.5.x kernels... no better.
Then i tried 2.4.22... and my nic still doesn't work fast.

What can i do?

There's some stuff in Documentation/networking/vortex.txt telling you how
to locate and run vortex-diag and mii-diag.

You might need to reprogram the eeprom using 3c90xx2.exe.

Should have read this before, sorry.

options=8 (autonegotiate) solves my problem. (driver could default to that?)
Sorry for wasting your time.

The eeprom has a field which defines the default, and the driver honours
that. I have a suspicion that the 3com windows just ignores the field.

You can reset the eeprom default with 3com's DOS-based setup tool.
