I suggest you send this patch to the maintainers of the power supply
subsystem for review: Anton Vorontsov and David Woodhouse (Cc'd.)

This lacks error checking.

You should be able to use i2c_smbus_read_word_data() for this (possibly
together with swab16 to correct byte ordering). This is recommended in
the datasheet to prevent a data update in the middle of a read.

I don't know if the power supply class has a standard to reporting
temperature values, but the hwmon class does, and it says that
temperatures should be reported in millidegrees C. That's not what you
do here AFAICS. It might be convenient to register a hwmon class device
and export the temperature there, so that libsensors picks it.

I also believe your math is a little more complex than it has to be. If
you just read the register value into an s16 and divide by 32, the sign
will be preserved.

If ds2782_read_reg() returns 0, you crash your kernel. No good.

This too might be good to export to the hwmon class.

Initializing fields of a zalloc'd structure to NULL is a no-op.

For consistency this should be a goto.

Hi Jean, thanks for the comments. I have fixed the following:
 - Added error checking for i2c reads
 - 16 bit i2c registers read with i2c_smbus_read_word_data/swab16
 - Simplified the math on the 10 bit temp and voltage registers
 - Power supply class measures temp in tenths of degrees celsius, added
a comment to make this clear.
 - Check sense_res to prevent div by zero crash.
 - Added calls to i2c_set_clientdata

I haven't added any code for exporting properties to the hwmon class.
The power supply class already exports these properties via sysfs, and
the other battery drivers don't export to hwmon.

Updated patch below.

Hwmon feels like a good idea. But no, drivers should not bother
with registering hwmon classes. Instead, some day we might want to
create power_supply_hwmon.c interface (like _sysfs.c that we have
already), the interface would register all needed stuff. And all
drivers will benefit right away without any modifications.

Thanks,
