[-- Attachment #1.1: Type: text/plain, Size: 707 bytes --]

Hello,

We are trying to get the audio chip (AT73C213) that comes on the AT91SAM9261-EK development board working. alsa-lib and alsa-utils, version 1.0.12 are currently installed.

# aplay -l shows that the audio chip is recognized as a playback device (and has a driver).
 # aplay -L fails; there aren't any PCM devices configured.
 # alsaconf fails too.

We can't seem to find .conf files for any Atmel chips among the Alsa docs and files.

I assume the missing .conf file is the issue. Has anyone been successful with this?

 Thanks,
iyer

Basically it should work even without the dedicated card's *.conf file
as alsa-lib takes pcm/default.conf. How did you install alsa-lib and
co?

Takashi,

 Thanks for your response..

Here are the steps followed in installing the alsa-lib on an ARM board:

 ALSA-lib install steps:

 [root@localhost alsa-lib-1.0.12]# CC=armv5l-linux-gcc ./configure --build=i386-linux --prefix=/board-rfs --host=armv5l-linux --target=armv5l-linux --enable-shared=yes --enable-static=no --disable-hwdep --disable-instr --with-headers=/board-rfs/usr/include/

 [root@localhost alsa-lib-1.0.12]# make TARGET_ARCH=arm

 [root@localhost alsa-lib-1.0.12]# make install_root=/board-rfs prefix="/board-rfs" install

 Appreciate your input.

Is /board-rfs the correct path? If you pass --prefix=/board-rfs, this
patch will be built into the binary, so the alsa-lib eventually
searchs for config files under /board-rfs/share/alsa/ and its sub
directories.

Thanks for your email, Takashi.

The config files (ainit.conf, alsa.conf) are found in board-rfs/etc/alsa; not in /board-rfs/share/alsa/ and its sub directories. I'm not sure if this is the correct location for the config files. If not, do let me know.

 /dev/snd has the sound devices controlC0 pcmC0D0p timer .

On playing a soundtest executable (random sound generator):
  -bash-3.1# ./soundtest default
ALSA lib pcm.c:2143:(snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM default
cannot open audio device default (No such file or directory)

Could this be tied in with the location of the config files ?

 Thanks in advance...

How did you install there? Manually?
As default, configure script should choose $datadir/alsa as the config
location.

Also, don't pass --prefix=/board-rfs. That's a wrong usage of prefix
option.

Following up, the kernel was compiled using gcc 3.4 instead of gcc 4.1 and the alsa driver seems to work better. This is a toolchain problem, according to Atmel and our distribution vendor.

But, we get the following error messages:

 -bash-3.1# aplay -D default Noise.wav
Playing WAVE 'Noise.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
ALSA lib pcm_plug.c:773:(snd_pcm_plug_hw_refine_schange) Unable to find an usable access for 'default'
aplay: set_params:909: Channels count non available

Could it be possible that there is something fishy going on with the alsa-lib ?

 Appreciate your input..

 Thanks,
 iyer

However on running an application, this is got

 -bash-3.1# ./soundtest default

Setting the environment variable $LIBASOUND_DEBUG to 1 does not cause any debugging information to be displayed to stderr. (I double checked via #echo to make sure LIBASOUND_DEBUG was set to 1)

I'm clueless, am I doing anything wrong ?

But --prefix=XXX overrides the path embedded in the code. For
installing to another root, passing DESTDIR=XXX at make install is the
standard procedure.

This is a different thing. Now the system files are properly set and
alsa-lib reads them. But, the driver returns an error for the
required PCM setting.

Try to set $LIBASOUND_DEBUG to 1. Then each hw_params error will be
displayed to stderr. See alsa-lib/NOTES for details.

Hi Takashi,

Omitting the --prefix =/board-rfs, DESTDIR=/board-rfs was passed in make install, and on checking, it seemed that the bin, lib, share and include components of the alsa-lib were installed under /board-rfs/usr

However on running an application, this is got

 -bash-3.1# ./soundtest default
ALSA lib pcm_params.c:2152:(snd_pcm_hw_refine_slave) Slave PCM not usable
cannot initialize hardware parameter structure (Invalid argument)

Setting the environment variable $LIBASOUND_DEBUG to 1 does not cause any debugging information to be displayed to stderr. (I double checked via #echo to make sure LIBASOUND_DEBUG was set to 1)

I'm clueless, am I doing anything wrong ?

 Thanks much,
 iyer
