Summary: Realtek ALC650 output problem
Description:
I have got a realtek ALC650 AC97 soundcard on my motherboard Abit BE7.
The problem is that I have got 5.1 speakers, and for have my subwoofer and
central speaker work, I need to put them on the "line in" connector
instead of the black connector (the black connector doesn't work).

I haven't got this problem with Windows.

Then the ICH4 does require the channel swapping? Grr, I hate this.

Try copy ICH.conf to ICH4.conf and replace the string "ICH" with "ICH4" in
the new config file. This should work without "Swap Surround"...

 willits - 06-24-05 18:23

I have done that, and this work without "swap surround"...

But I haven't all my speaker works when I am playing an audio or Video
file (with 2 channels)

2.0 -> 5.1 isn't supported _on hardware_ with ALC650.  Only 2.0 -> 4.0 is
supported. But, of course, you can do 2.0->5.1 on software, i.e. in
alsa-lib configuration. It's your homework :)

I don't want 3D control (I have got 5.1 speaker that done this work).
I am searching in the alsa configuration, but I didn't really understand
the file alsa.conf, how I can get 2.0->5.1 by software ?

In the /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf file, there are this :

defaults.ctl.card 0
defaults.pcm.card 0
defaults.pcm.device 0
defaults.pcm.subdevice -1
defaults.pcm.front.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.front.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.rear.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.rear.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.center_lfe.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.center_lfe.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.side.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.side.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.surround40.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.surround40.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.surround41.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.surround41.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.surround50.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.surround50.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.surround51.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.surround51.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.surround71.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.surround71.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.iec958.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.iec958.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.pcm.modem.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.modem.device defaults.pcm.device
defaults.rawmidi.card 0
defaults.rawmidi.device 0
defaults.rawmidi.subdevice -1
defaults.hwdep.card 0
defaults.hwdep.device 0
defaults.timer.class 2
defaults.timer.sclass 0
defaults.timer.card 0
defaults.timer.device 0
defaults.timer.subdevice 0

--> In this, I have seen that :

defaults.pcm.surround51.card defaults.pcm.card
defaults.pcm.surround51.device defaults.pcm.device

But I didn't know how I can configure Alsa-lib for use this (surround51).

If you can help me

Yes, but when I enable Duplicate front, I have got only front and rear
speaker who work, no LFE or center. (These speaker are on the black
connector)

But I want to know If I can enable this feature of my soundcard :

White-Side:/proc/asound/card0/codec97#0 # cat ac97#0-0
0-0/0: Realtek ALC650E

Capabilities :
DAC resolution : 20-bit
ADC resolution : 18-bit
3D enhancement : Realtek 3D Stereo Enhancement --> I want to enable this

Current setup
Mic gain : +0dB [+0dB]
POP path : pre 3D
Sim. stereo : off
3D enhancement : off --> This is disabled

Summary: Realtek ALC650 output problem
Description:
I have got a realtek ALC650 AC97 soundcard on my motherboard Abit BE7.
The problem is that I have got 5.1 speakers, and for have my subwoofer and
central speaker work, I need to put them on the "line in" connector
instead of the black connector (the black connector doesn't work).

I haven't got this problem with Windows.

Did you enable "Duplicate Front" switch?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 willits - 06-24-05 18:36
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, but when I enable Duplicate front, I have got only front and rear
speaker who work, no LFE or center. (These speaker are on the black
connector)

But I want to know If I can enable this feature of my soundcard :

0-0/0: Realtek ALC650E

Capabilities :
DAC resolution : 20-bit
ADC resolution : 18-bit
3D enhancement : Realtek 3D Stereo Enhancement --> I want to enable this

Current setup
Mic gain : +0dB [+0dB]
POP path : pre 3D
Sim. stereo : off
3D enhancement : off --> This is disabled

I have done that, and this work without "swap surround"...

file (with 2 channels)

Summary: Realtek ALC650 output problem
Description:
I have got a realtek ALC650 AC97 soundcard on my motherboard Abit BE7.
The problem is that I have got 5.1 speakers, and for have my subwoofer and
central speaker work, I need to put them on the "line in" connector
instead of the black connector (the black connector doesn't work).

I haven't got this problem with Windows.

I didn't really understand how I can see if there are the plugin "route".

I have attached these file : ICH.conf and ICH4.conf

-- > There are not "route" in the file ICH4.conf, but in ICH.conf file,
there are route.

 tiwai - 06-24-05 17:59
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Then the ICH4 does require the channel swapping? Grr, I hate this.

Try copy ICH.conf to ICH4.conf and replace the string "ICH" with "ICH4" in
the new config file. This should work without "Swap Surround"...

Then chekc whether /usr/share/alsa/cards/ICH4.conf includes "route" plugin.
Just grep route ICH4.conf. If it exists, the configuration is old. If
not, ... the problem is deeper.

Then chekc whether /usr/share/alsa/cards/ICH4.conf includes "route" plugin.
Just grep route ICH4.conf. If it exists, the configuration is old. If
not, ... the problem is deeper.

It does, indeed. ICH4/5/6 are using "ICH4" driver type, and it uses
ICH4.conf while ICH/2/3 is "ICH" driver type with ICH.conf. The latter
swaps the channels of surround51 PCM via route plugin.

Can't we add a quirk to the driver, so that it can detect the motherboard
type and set all the correct outputs as default.

 tiwai - 06-24-05 15:19
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It does, indeed. ICH4/5/6 are using "ICH4" driver type, and it uses
ICH4.conf while ICH/2/3 is "ICH" driver type with ICH.conf. The latter
swaps the channels of surround51 PCM via route plugin.

Swap Surround is not necessary with ICH4 but older ICH models seem
requiring the channel swapping.

Please show the content of /proc/asound/cards, and attach the files
/proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/* files for more checks.
Also, make sure that you installed alsa-lib-1.0.9.

The playback of 2ch samples with surrounds is enabled by "Duplicate Front"
switch, BTW. Or, it's possible via own asoundrc configuration, too.

I have done this command :
speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c6

And the result is really strange, (I have disabled duplicate front in
AlsaMixer and Line-in-as-Surround, and I have connected the subwoofer to
the "black connector")

I have got this result :

 0 - Front Left -> Work
4 - Center -> Is the rear left
 1 - Front Right -> Work
 3 - Rear Right-> No sound
2 - Rear Left -> Is the center
5 - LFE -> Is the rear right

Very strange bug, I haven't got this bug under Windows. (So no connector
problem)

Summary: Realtek ALC650 output problem
Description:
I have got a realtek ALC650 AC97 soundcard on my motherboard Abit BE7.
The problem is that I have got 5.1 speakers, and for have my subwoofer and
central speaker work, I need to put them on the "line in" connector
instead of the black connector (the black connector doesn't work).

I haven't got this problem with Windows.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
To be sure: how did you test the surround outputs?
For testing surround speakers, try speaker-test in alsa-utils at first.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 willits - 06-23-05 19:21
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have done this command :
speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c6

And the result is really strange, (I have disabled duplicate front in
AlsaMixer and Line-in-as-Surround, and I have connected the subwoofer to
the "black connector")

I have got this result :

 0 - Front Left -> Work
4 - Center -> Is the rear left
 1 - Front Right -> Work
 3 - Rear Right-> No sound
2 - Rear Left -> Is the center
5 - LFE -> Is the rear right

Very strange bug, I haven't got this bug under Windows. (So no connector
problem)

For testing surround speakers, try speaker-test in alsa-utils at first.

Hmm, then this sounds like a long-standing bug of ALC650 support code.
Interestingly, this seems to get fixed on some ALC650 revisions, but you
seem to have no luck yet.

What I don't understand is "black jack" in your description. How many
jacks does the device have and how are they supposed to work?

BTW, with ALSA 1.0.9, there is no longer "Line-In As Surround" and "Mic As
Center/LFE" switches. If you still see these switches in alsamixer, it
means that you're using an older verison.

These controls are merged to "Channel Mode" enum control and "Surround
Jack Mode" on 1.0.9. For 6-channel output, choose "6ch" in the former
control. Usually it's chosen automatically when you use "surround51" PCM
output.
The latter determines whether to use shared jacks or independet jacks. If
you have independent surround output jacks, choose "Independent" there.

I haven't got this problem with Windows.

 tiwai - 06-17-05 15:10
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why don't use ALSA drivers 1.0.9b? The drivers on 2.6.11.x kernel are old.
(And note that the surround-related controls were changed on 1.0.9.
Please attach /etc/asound.state again after update.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------
 willits - 06-17-05 20:32
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have got Alsa 1.0.9 (distributed by Suse), I can try with 1.0.9b but I
didn't think that this correct the problem (I have got this bug since my
first linux (Mandrake 9 and Alsa 0.9))
