I actually compile-tested before I sent this.  For once ;)

Here's container_of():

    #define container_of(ptr, type, member) ({                      \
            const typeof(((type *) 0)->member) *__mptr = (ptr);     \
            (type *) ((char *) __mptr - offsetof(type, member));})

Its first argument's only use is as an initializer for a pointer
variable.  Both type * and void * work fine there.
