Edison Next

[Joshua Lock]

Hi,

There are plenty of folks still using Edison and bugs being filed 
against that release series so I've started pulling together a branch of 
fixes for another Edison point release.

So far I have:
* Several fixes for useradd
* A fix for building syslinux on hosts with 3.3 or newer kernels [YOCTO 
#2236]
* Fixes so that live images greater than 1GB in size can boot [YOCTO #2138]

If there are other fixes you would like to see in the Edison series 
please point me at bug numbers or, even better, patches.

I, of course, have more fixes I can suggest. I'll try to look next
week when I'm back in the office.

Hi,

is there a page somewhere on the yoctoproject or pokylinux that explains what
the current release is, what the next one will be, when the next one will be
released, how long the old one will be supported/

Releases are on an approximately 6 month cadence, the last release was 
Edison in October 2011[1].

Our FAQ addresses the support question[2]:

"Q: What is the overall support plan for the Yocto Project?

A: Security patches and critical bug fixes are supplied one release 
back. No toolchain or kernel changes are allowed for these updates. 
Support for longer periods of time can be supplied by commercial OSVs."

We also have a public calendar that others have linked to.

The above FAQ is a tad vague... what if the kernel or toolchain change
is a security fix?

That's a reasonable question, but not one I can answer with any 
authority, having not authored the FAQ.

I infer that it means toolchain or kernel *version* changes, as we 
strive to avoid breaking compatibility with any existing layers, etc. 
when providing a stable release update.

Joshua is correct, we should update the FAQ to state "Major Version" 
changes to toolchain or kernel.  If there is a CVE that is addressed by 
a patch or maintence update we will ensure those get in.

Yes, the intention is toolchain/kernel -bug fixes- are allowed.. version and 
more specifically API changes are not allowed.  Feature/ABI stability is the key.

I'm running into an issue with xserver-nodm where useradd retries 10 
times and gives up. I think it's the RPM ordering issue from #2218

This is fixed in master and Denzil but the RPM package backend has 
changed significantly since Edison. I'm trying to figure out the 
smallest change possible for Edison to fix this issue.

Perhaps I will get to it next week. I need to re-acclimate to what
I've done though.
