Hi all,

Looks like 4.20-rc1 is broken for us. It is not one of our changes, I
went through them again on top of 4.19 and they test out fine

A.

This looks like something specific to ttys - the io there gets
corruption and/or hangs.

I cannot reproduce it when I ssh in.

It does not look like it is the new write IRQ bugfix - that works fine
over 4.19.

Still debugging...

Hmm, I don't see this with my Debian userspace.
What exactly is your setup/config?

Thanks,
//richard

Debian stretch + the openswitch runtime. Works fine with 4.19 and worked
fine since 4.14.

The test is to cat something big to the terminal. If you just run it
with xterm it does not show up 95% of the cases. In fact you may never
notice it.

I use the changelog from dimngr (/usr/share/doc/dirmng/changelog.gz) for
that purpose. It is 768k once it has been gunzipped. Any large text file
(a few 100k) will do.

If you cat that with 4.20-rc1 using xterm you get terminal corruption -
garbage shows up in the input buffer. Similar story with stdio fd
console, but much easier to reproduce and the console can even hang
during boot.

For comparison purposes, a console in plain 4.19 without the write IRQ
fix will hang on that test (not always, it may take a couple of runs).
With the IRQ fix it is stable - you can run it in a loop 24x7.

Gotcha.

8ebfe885c65ec82a0b1e955cf99ed62664e84414 is the guilty party.

With it, I get tty corruption on UML. Any attempt to push a large amount
of data via the console results in spurious echoes or even a hang.

Reverting it fixes things.

Cc-ing Greg - it was merged from his tree.

I will try to figure out what exactly is wrong with it in the meantime.
On first reading it looked OK.

Resend - got Greg's address wrong and missed the commit author. Apologies.

Really?!
This is "TTY: sn_console: Replace spin_is_locked() with spin_trylock()".
sn_console is "SGI Altix L1 serial console"...

Thanks,

OK. Then I am losing my mind.

No idea what is going on...

Going back and redoing all the tests starting from plain 4.20-rc1 and
onwards.

Mea culpa.

I was going through the commits from the tty changes one by one and for
some reason things started working after reverting this one.

I cannot reproduce the original issue now with a totally clean build and
a clean image.

I am going back through my local tree and images to see what caused in
the first place.

For now it looks like 4.20-rc1 is OK.

Nothing, problem on my end. Something wrong with my setup and rolling
back your commit was a false-positive.

I apologize, please ignore. i will continue digging to try to figure out
what's wrong.

Not fully. I stand by my earlier statement - 4.20-rc1 is not quite right.

The combination of debug options I had enabled hanged UML on boot with
4.20-rc1 made it hang on boot or produce the aforementioned corruption
on tty later.

Turning all debug off gives me a kernel which boots. However, it fails
later at some point either on networking or or on disk.

The same images boot cleanly with 4.14 to 4.19 +/- various fixes.

I am going to rebuild everything from scratch including new clean Debian
images tomorrow and start digging again.

I did a test with your .config and indeed, UML hangs.

The offending commit is this one:
commit ecb0a83e3198f2c1142901687afacbc73602a13b
Author: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de>
Date: Thu Oct 18 22:55:03 2018 +0200

    ubd: remove use of blk_rq_map_sg

There is no good reason to create a scatterlist in the ubd driver,
it can just iterate the request directly.

    Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de>
[rw: Folded in improvements as discussed with hch and jens]
    Signed-off-by: Richard Weinberger <richard@nod.at>
    Signed-off-by: Jens Axboe <axboe@kernel.dk>

Please check your root filesystem, it is possible that the broken block
driver broke it and you see further problems.
Let me figure what in your .config triggers the issue.

Thanks,
//richard

Christoph,

Anton found a problem in your "ubd: remove use of blk_rq_map_sg" patch.
With CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC enabled, the ubd driver crashes because it tries
to deref address 0x12345678, which is the poison from store_stackinfo().

Please see below for more info.

Sounds like it. But I'll need some more time to debug it.

I had to revert 4e6da0fe8058df9bfa937902fcd9cb2b7b89b2df "um: Convert
ubd driver to blk-mq" as well to get things back to business as usual.

The block-mq driver works for reading - no issues if everything is ro.
It also clearly works for writing for some configs in older kernels,
otherwise it would have been picked up.

Something changed in 4.20-rc1 which made it fail in my config. The
failure is instantaneous for 4.20-rc1 with only
ecb0a83e3198f2c1142901687afacbc73602a13b " ubd: remove use of
blk_rq_map_sg" reverted.

Reverting both and restoring the driver to 4.19 state fixes things.

I am going to give it a go to debug exactly what breaks for writing in
ecb0a83e3198f2c1142901687afacbc73602a13b " ubd: remove use of
blk_rq_map_sg".

First of all, I apologize for not looking at it properly when it first
came out, I was buried under openswitch and opendaylight at the time.

I have looked at it again and I see a few issues with it:

1. On transient failure after a requeue it returns BLK_STS_OK, shouldn't
this be BLK_STS_RESOURCE?

2. On transient failure it redoes the whole SG list. That should not be
the case, it should record how far it got to and redo the list from there:

https://elixir.bootlin.com/linux/latest/source/drivers/block/nbd.c#L509

These should not prevent it from working though and should not cause an
immediate failure when trying to mount rw or remount a ro as rw. I have
not found the cause for that one yet.
