Hi all,

It’s time again for the x86 community call: for the agenda see https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RxW-iwcFFuKzNjjEqLEtiwFVHgAUlk35c0EtTkRE1k4/edit#

Please propose new agenda items by next Friday (feel free to just add them to the document or reply to this mail)

I listed open Actions below: open actions are on Andy, Janakarajan, George and Doug
There is still a week and a bit to close open actions.

Note that the meeting is at a different UTC time, but at the same local times except for China

Regards
Lars

Open / Closed Actions from Previous calls

Jan: blocked series
x86: more power-efficient CPU parking
Blocked on HW vendors (aka Intel and AMD) - not in HW manual. That only applies to the last patch (aka 5). Andy says he has reviewed it, Jan disagrees.

ACTION: Andy will double check whether he reviewed patch 4
ACTION: Janakarajan will take a look and ask relevant people in AMD
ACTION: Lars to escalate Intel part to Susie Li / John Ji (done)

Jan: blocked series
x86emul: fixes, improvements, and beginnings of AVX512 support
Andy points out that a series like this takes almost a day to review, because of complexity and size (also of the manual). Issues with cross-correlating manual vs. emulator code, because code uses different names than manual. Renaming helpers helped a little a bit. Would be disappointing if we missed 4.12

ACTION: George and Andy: Need a separate discussion to come up with a workable approach and no-one has a good solution. George and Andy to bring back to xen-devel

Nist Security Paper
ACTION: Lars set up wiki page and add to the minutes and respond to the call for feedback
See https://wiki.xenproject.org/wiki/Characterizing_Vulnerabilities_in_Platform_Security (done)

AOB
* Lars was wondering who will be at KVM forum. Maybe we can get a Xen group together (although this is not strictly x86 related)
Christopher Clark, Rich Persaud, Daniel Smith and Citrix folks attending => Lars to start a thread to coordinate a face-2-face meeting (done)
* AMD Ryzen/EPYC machines for the Xen Project test lab: any recommendations as per specific CPU SKU or will any do
ACTION: Lars to email Brian & Jon Grimm (done)
* Bug tracking (Doug)
ACTION: Set up cross functional call - waiting for mail by Doug

I've just added a TMEM item, and seeing only Daniel from Oracle on the
Cc list here I've added Konrad so he might arrange for someone to
attend to clarify their intentions with it.

Konrad is not available this week. However, AFAICT we do not have any
plans WRT TMEM. Anyway, I am CC-ing Joao and Boris. There is chance that
they know something more than I.

Konrad told me that if you would like to rip TMEM out he will ack the patch.

No, I don't have anything to add.

Is this true for Linux kernel drivers/xen/tmem.c, too?

All,

I added an action item to the list for the November call to discuss the work we are doing at AIS with respect to documenting every resource and register that a Xen PVH guest touches using the Bareflank hypervisor. We are taking a whitelist approach which means to get a Xen PVH guest to work we have to explicitly grant access to every CPUID, MSR, port, memory address, and privileged instruction and we are documenting these requirements as we go. The goal of the discussion is to introduce our work and get feedback and interest in the results from the rest of the group.

Thanks,
