[PATCH v4 00/15] Add support for OLPC XO 1.75 Embedded Controller

Hello!

This is a fourth spin of the patch set that adds support for the
Embedded Controller on an OLPC XO 1.75 machine.

It hopefully incorporated all feedback received previously and also
fixes the kbuild test bot failures. The failed builds were generally
caused by configurations where the EC driver was built as module.

It turned out that the patch that turned the OLPC EC common code into
a module was not the brightest idea. I now dropped it and modified the
04/15 to not require it.

Also, the 01/15 patch has been added to allow the module to provide a
reboot handler. Patch 15/15 depends on it.

Tested to work on an OLPC XO 1.75 and also tested not to break x86
support with an OLPC XO 1 machine. I don't have a XO 1.5, but it's
unlikely this breaks it when XO 1 works.

[PATCH v4 01/15] ARM: export arm_pm_restart()

The OLPC XO 1.75 laptop is rebooted with a command to the Embedded
Controller. The EC driver should be a module, since most people don't need
it to be compiled in.

[PATCH v4 02/15] dt-bindings: olpc, xo1.75-ec: Add OLPC XO-1.75 EC bindings

The OLPC XO-1.75 Embedded Controller is a SPI master that uses extra
signals for handshaking. It needs to know when is the slave (Linux)
side's TX FIFO ready for transfer (the ready-gpio signal on the SPI
controller node) and when does it wish to respond with a command (the
cmd-gpio property).

[PATCH v4 04/15] Platform: OLPC: Add XO-1.75 EC driver

It's based off the driver from the OLPC kernel sources. Somewhat
modernized and cleaned up, for better or worse.

Modified to plug into the olpc-ec driver infrastructure (so that battery
interface and debugfs could be reused) and the SPI slave framework.

[PATCH v4 06/15] Platform: OLPC: Move EC-specific functionality out from x86

[Lubomir Rintel]

Move the olpc-ec driver away from the X86 OLPC platform so that it could be
used by the ARM based laptops too. Notably, the driver for the OLPC battery,
which is also used on the ARM models, builds on this driver's interface.

It is actually plaform independent: the OLPC EC commands with their argument
and responses are mostly the same despite the delivery mechanism is
different.

[PATCH v4 10/15] x86, olpc: Use a correct version when making up a battery node

[Lubomir Rintel]

The XO-1 and XO-1.5 batteries apparently differ in an ability to report
ambient temperature. Add a different compatible string to the 1.5
battery.

[PATCH v4 11/15] power: supply: olpc_battery: Use DT to get battery version

[Lubomir Rintel]

Avoid using the x86 OLPC platform specific call to get the board
version. That wouldn't work on FDT-based ARM MMP2 platform.

Add the XO 1.5 compatible string too. This is actually not completely
necessary as the battery nodes on XO 1.5 claim to be compatible with
"olpc,xo1-battery", but there are, in fact, differencies.

[PATCH v4 15/15] power: supply: olpc_battery: Add OLPC XO 1.75 support

[Lubomir Rintel]

The battery and the protocol are essentially the same as OLPC XO 1.5,
but the responses from the EC are LSB first.

Why do you need this - is there a reason why you can't hook onto the
restart_handler_list using register_restart_handler()?  The registered
handlers are passed the command.

I would rather this is not exported to modules, it is generally unsafe
to hook stuff by directly poking function pointers from module code.

Actually, yes. The restart handlers are invoked in atomic context, but
the EC communication needs to block. (The 1.75 EC is actually a SPI
master: a command it initiated by poking a GPIO and waiting until EC
tells us it's ready to read a command.)

Sorry for not mentioning that earlier, I forgot that it is the case.

Isn't it a quite big distance between provider and consumer?
Especially taking into consideration concerns about patch 1 which
blocks the series.
Perhaps you may drop it as a patch 1 and do something on top of patch
15 as feature extension?

Still same concern, i.e. if the initially added definitions are
coupled together by some reason, why we split them?
As I told either move all, or none or put in commit message how
decoupling would benefit.

Yes, that is a good idea. I'll do so when I submit a new version of the
set (in few days' time).

I think the battery part can be split from the EC part too. Would that
be a good idea to send them as separate patch sets next time? It seems
to me now that they probably ought to end up going in via different
trees (linux-power-supply vs linux-platform-drivers-x86).

Yes, any independent porions can be send independently. It would speed
up the review and applying process.

I'm not moving this one -- I'm deleting it, because it's no longer used
or useful. I don't mind keeping it there if you think it should stay
