Hi Andrew, hi list!

Suddenly, after 160 days of running, our bridged firewall started to

This was first with 2.4.19 plus bridge-firewall patches. I installed
2.4.22 with the latest ebtables/brfw patches, but got the same errors.
In all the cases reconfiguring the interfaces didn't help to bring it
back to life, only reboot helped. Now the very same error happens
already several times in a short period.

This always happened with eth1, so we think it *may* a hardware error
creeping in. I would like to know wether this can be the case, or
wether there is something else (switches on the other side, ...) which
may have produced these errors.

Best wishes

Yes, a bad cable might explain this. Or another host which is babbling
away all the time (on a half-duplex setup).

The last will not be the case, all is full-duplex here. I will report
back after I some time of tests with a new nic. Maybe the one was
finally broken. Thanks for you answer!

My gateway started to give me this errors on eth0 some days ago. Eth0 is
the internal network-card, which is connected to just one pc through a
crossed tp-cable. When I run a certain app on my pc (xMule), the gateway
alway starts spitting those messages.

Could have been hardware, but only happens when xmule is active on my
computer. Wasn't like this earlier.

HI list!

We regularly experience kernel Ooops on our alpha SX164 with ext3 on md
on ide controller:

No modules loaded, lsmod empty, self compiled kernel

ksymoops 2.4.5 on alpha 2.4.25. Options used
     -V (default)
     -k /proc/ksyms (default)
     -l /proc/modules (default)
     -o /lib/modules/2.4.25/ (default)
     -m /boot/System.map-2.4.25 (default)

Warning: You did not tell me where to find symbol information. I will
assume that the log matches the kernel and modules that are running
right now and I'll use the default options above for symbol resolution.
If the current kernel and/or modules do not match the log, you can get
more accurate output by telling me the kernel version and where to find
map, modules, ksyms etc. ksymoops -h explains the options.

No modules in ksyms, skipping objects
Warning (read_lsmod): no symbols in lsmod, is /proc/modules a valid lsmod file?

Hi Ingo, hi Neil, hi lists!

We have some problems with the md code on alpha. We get regular oops
when using the md raid1. Here we got another oops when fsck (at boot
time) the raid:
This was after a fresh reboot. As long as only the raid is *not* mounted
of fsck the machine works without any oops.

I also can mount the hard disks *without* raid directly as hda1 and
hdc1, and do NOT get any errors here, so I suspect that only the md code
is the culprit.

Please tell me how I can track down this problem, how I can help you!

ksymoops 2.4.5 on alpha 2.4.25. Options used
     -V (default)
     -k /proc/ksyms (default)
     -l /proc/modules (default)
     -o /lib/modules/2.4.25/ (default)
     -m /boot/System.map-2.4.25 (default)

Warning: You did not tell me where to find symbol information. I will
assume that the log matches the kernel and modules that are running
right now and I'll use the default options above for symbol resolution.
If the current kernel and/or modules do not match the log, you can get
more accurate output by telling me the kernel version and where to find
map, modules, ksyms etc. ksymoops -h explains the options.

No modules in ksyms, skipping objects
Warning (read_lsmod): no symbols in lsmod, is /proc/modules a valid lsmod file?

Please clarify symptoms regarding fsck at boot and Oops. Are they like mine?

Symptoms I have had with a compact flash boot hda (ide) are that
clean boot with fsck doing nothing is OK no Oops.

If fsck corrects anything and boot continues then Oops will occur. That is I
need to reboot machine after fsck rc=1 or I get Oops.

Ross.

Looks like the well known bad assembler code with gcc.
On the alpha you see the problem first in the
raid1_read_balance() code sequence..
You should use gcc 3.3.2 better 3.3.3.
For alpha find the binary rpms here:

Very likely.

Also, here is a hack (originally from Jay Estabrook) which
should work around a bug in older compilers.

I used this diff and it is working now, at least I hope, tests are
coming.

Again, thanks again for the fast answer!

I know from my own system, that the oops in the raid1 sources, are
not the only point, where gcc generates wrong assembler code.
So it't better not to workaround just this single point, but
use the fixed gcc instead.
