* [patch] copy_to_user check and whitespace cleanups in fs/cifs/file.c

Hi,

Patch below adds a check for the copy_to_user return value and makes a few 
whitespace cleanups in  fs/cifs/file.c::cifs_user_read()
I hope bundling two different things together in one patch is OK when the 
change is as small as this, but if you want it spplit in two patches, then 
just say so.

Corrupts the stats
Fails to free smb_read_data where in some cases it was freed before

I'm not sure the stats matter but I think you need something more like


residue = copy_to_user(....)
if(smb_read_data) {
   cifs_buf_release(...)
  ...
}

Then

if(residue) {
    total_read += bytes_read - residue;
    FreeXid(xid);
    return total_read ? total_read: -EFAULT;
}

I take that to mean that if we do manage to read something before we run 
into the fault it's better to return what we have read than the fact that 
we ran into a fault... that makes sense. Sure, I'll cook up a patch to do 
that instead (tomorrow - I need some sleep).

Like this patch perhaps? :

It implements what you sugested except it breaks the loop when there's 
some residue from the copy_to_user call, since the logic after the while 
loop handles the   return total_read ? total_read : -EFAULT;  case if we 
set rc and break (I've cut the diff with a few lines of extra context to 
make this easy to verify).

The style used in fs/cifs/file.c is not very consistent and (to me at 
least) seems to diverge a bit from CodingStyle and there's some 
whitespace damage in there as well.
This patch attempts to make the style a bit more consistent and readable 
and tries to clean up the whitespace damage. 
The patch is cut on top of my copy_to_user fix patch that was just posted 
a few minutes ago.
This patch makes no actual code changes.

in two places in fs/cifs/file.c we assign -EIO to a variable (rc) then 
do something unrelated to rc, then return rc. The assignment of -EIO to rc 
is unnessesary, we may as well just return -EIO directly and avoid the 
extra assignment (yeah, the compiler will probably optimize it, but 
still...).

Sure.  I noticed it while going through your patch, that's all.  If
you find the time for a second patch, that would be nice.  Casts are a
very effective obfuscation method and most are pretty simple to avoid.
Maybe I should check the kernel janitor list and add this point, if
it doesn't exist yet.

Sorry.  The whole function declaration is spread over three lines.  I
don't mind p***ing Linus off iff putting the return type on a seperate
line is sufficient to fit all the rest into a single line.  Doesn't

If they are on separate lines, grep ^function won't return every single use.
And -B 1 will show the return type as well.
