I'm having identical problems with a pair of Fibrenetix VP-1252-U4
plugged on:
- Dual Xeon 32 bits with a mobo-integrated:
    03:02.0 SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AIC-7902B U320 (rev 10)
    03:02.1 SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AIC-7902B U320 (rev 10)
    and a 2.6.11-1.14_FC3.smp kernel

- Dual Xeon 64 bits with a mobo-integrated:
    02:02.0 SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AIC-7902B U320 (rev 10)
    02:02.1 SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AIC-7902B U320 (rev 10)
    and a 2.6.13.2 kernel (native 64bits)

It seems not to happen on a Dual Xeon 32 with a pci(x?) card:
    01:02.0 SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AIC-7892A U160/m (rev 02)

The error I get is:

The Fibrenetix appears as a pair of 2Tb disks at 0/0/0 and 0/0/1.
There is nothing else on the same scsi bus (there are things on scsi0
though).

What should I try ?

What was it doing before this? i.e. what were all the messages from the
card. The message happens when the aic driver is unable to clear its
pending workqueue after it suspends ... which is part of error recovery.
So, what error was it trying to recover from?

By the way, your AIC-7892 is a different driver.

James

Good question. Here is a complete dmesg starting at the mount
/dev/sdb1 /ritel1 which crashes the system eventually (I did a dmesg -c
just before doing the mount):

Hmm, that message doesn't appear in the current kernel driver.

Is this a non-standard kernel or non-standard aic79xx driver?

Hmmm, indeed, a leftover from when I was trying to debug some things
(a message in ahd_linux_abort). Lemme recompile a perfectly vanilla
2.6.13.2.

Just reproduced the exact same message with a vanilla 2.6.13.2.
Checking the just-untarred sources, it _is_ in aix79xx_osm.c, in
ahd_linux_abort. You must have typoed "Attempting" in your grep :-)

Want be to try to BUG() it or something to get a stack trace? The
crash happens a handful of seconds after the card dumping, time enough
for a well-placed dmesg in an xterm.

Incidentally, how can one get a backtrace without crashing the kernel
in the operation?

  OG.

Oh .. apparently that message got removed between 2.6.13 and current git
head.

Is there any chance you could try this with the latest git snapshot and
post all the messages from the time the aic79xx is detected to the time
this message appears ... what I'm trying to ascertain is if anything
went wrong in negotiating with the device (2.6.13 unfortunately is a bit
terse on the negotiation messages ... git head will be slightly more
verbose).

Thanks,

James

Ok, for git HEAD 95001ee9256df846e374f116c92ca8e0beec1527. The system
has the nice idea not to crash at the end, so I can fish everything
out of /var/log/messages (kernel messages only):

Well ... at least that's slightly better behaviour ...

I'm afraid the initial analysis is that this is a bug in the adaptec
sequencer (again) which no-one has the docs to fix. Guessing about the
cause, I'd say it's most likely some type of data overrun, so it might
be possible to change the operating parameters of the system so it no
longer trips ...

The first thing to try here is to bring the offset down to 63 like all
the other devices. You can do this by

echo 63 > /sys/class/spi_transport/target1\:0\:0/max_offset
echo 1 > /sys/class/spi_transport/target1\:0\:0/revalidate

Which should retrigger the above domain validation but this time come
back with an offset of 63.

*before* getting to the mount on /dev/sdb1.

If that doesn't fix it, the next steps will be to begin lowering the
transmission parameters.

Oh, that's not pretty. It means that the sequencer (or possibly the
bus) was wedged as it exited domain validation and it won't even recover
if we drop down to fully async.

What type of array is this, by the way? I don't recognise the vendor.
But anyway, let's proceed on the theory that the array is having a hard
time. What I need you to do is lower the speed of the array target in
the aic bios. Unfortunately, the driver won't honour that setting at
the moment: I'll see if I can work up the code that will do it. The
attached patch will perform this artificially (for every device on every
aic79xx).

The mounts worked with your patch. I'm going to start actually using
the raid, that's going to tell us how stable it actually is. I have
no problems with doing other tests.

OK, that sort of confirms the theory that there's a bad interaction at
u320. What I'll try to do is to implement the bios parameter routines
for the aic79xx and you can set it to u160 in the bios. Since I can't
test this, would you be a guinea pig when I come up with it?

James
