This looks similar to:

Does reverting 608dfddd845da5ab6accef70154c8910529699f7 fix it for you too?

Yes, remarkably similar ;)

It does indeed. Thanks for the pointer.

Let me know if this change is going to be reverted, as I have a patch
ready to support cpu hotplug for oprofile based on code post
DEFINE_PER_CPU patch.
Thanks,

Please don't top-post. I repaired it so that I could reply sensibly.

In trying to reprocude this on a uniprocessor machine, it seems that
someone broke oprofile:

/usr/bin/opcontrol: line 911: /dev/oprofile/0/enabled: No such file or directory
/usr/bin/opcontrol: line 911: /dev/oprofile/0/event: No such file or directory

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 May 13 01:25 pointer_size
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 0 May 13 01:25 stats

Looks like the "0" got renamed to "1". Who did that?

So then I try it on the old 2-way:

No event named GLOBAL_POWER_EVENTS is available.
No event named GLOBAL_POWER_EVENTS is available.
No event named GLOBAL_POWER_EVENTS is available.
No event named GLOBAL_POWER_EVENTS is available.
No event named GLOBAL_POWER_EVENTS is available.

so that got broken too.

I queued the revert of 608dfddd845da5ab6accef70154c8910529699f7,
although that doesn't fix these regressions.

I see no oops. And I don't see what's wrong with the fairly simple
per-cpu conversion, so I'd rather not revert what appears to be a good
patch when we don't understand what's going wrong.

Grasping at straws, we have had problems with per-cpu variable
initialisation in the past. Does this

fix anything for anyone?

There's also a commit d18d00f5dbcd1a95811617e9812cf0560bd465ee with
the following text, which seems related?

"The existing code passed a reference to cpu 0's instance of struct op_msrs
to model->shutdown, whilst the other functions are passed a reference to
<this cpu's> instance of a struct op_msrs. This seemed to be a bug to me
even though as long as cpu 0 and <this cpu> are of the same type it would
    have the same effect...?"

I didn't try sampling those events, but CPU_CLK_UNHALTED (or whatever
default is now) seems to work fine on my 2-way... (when percpu patch is
reverted)

Nope, exact same bad paging request in kernel mode... probably the bug
is something deep in oprofile then?

Hum... Are you using oprofile as a module or statically included in kernel ?

Current module loader only allocates percpu room by examining
".data.percpu" section and should be augmented to also look at
".data.percpu.shared_aligned"
Or, change DEFINE_PER_CPU_SHARED_ALIGNED() for modules (to use
".data.percpu" only)

Anyway, with the per_cpu conversion of cpu_buffer, we dont need to
request cache_line alignment anymore

[PATCH] oprofile: Dont request cache line alignment for cpu_buffer

Alignment was previously requested because cpu_buffer was an [NR_CPUS]
array, to avoid cache line sharing between CPUS.

After commit 608dfddd845da5ab6accef70154c8910529699f7 (
oprofile: change cpu_buffer from array to per_cpu variable ),
we dont need to force an alignement anymore since cpu_buffer sits in
per_cpu zone.

Yes module

Nice theory, but with percpu + this patch, it still leads to the same
BUG trap :(

Oops, how embarrassing. I applied the patch manually and missed out the
first chunk. Disregard previous post. This fixes the problem for me.

Good work one and all :)

Andrew,

This patch is a follow up to thread initiated by Gianni Tedesco
in http://marc.info/?l=linux-kernel&m=121059431214889&w=2
(oprofile BUG() in current kernel.)

Thank you

[PATCH] per_cpu: fix DEFINE_PER_CPU_SHARED_ALIGNED for modules

Current module loader lookups ".data.percpu" ELF section to perform
per_cpu relocation. But DEFINE_PER_CPU_SHARED_ALIGNED()
uses another section (".data.percpu.shared_aligned"), currently only
handled in vmlinux.lds, not by module loader.

To correct this problem, instead of adding logic into module loader,
or using at build time a module.lds file for all arches to group
".data.percpu.shared_aligned" into ".data.percpu",
just use ".data.percpu" for modules.

Alignment requirements are correctly handled by ld and module loader.

Well that's a little landmine. Seems that this was the first attempt to
use DEFINE_PER_CPU_SHARED_ALIGNED from within a module.

Thanks. Silly me for looking at the nearly-one-year-old
DEFINE_PER_CPU_SHARED_ALIGNED and assuming that it worked :(

Andrew,

A typo was included in the patch I sent yesterday, since I was testing :

#ifdef CONFIG_MODULES

while the intention was to test

#ifdef MODULE

So that all SHARED_ALIGNED vmlinux percpu variables still are in the
special section.
The fix is only needed when compiling modules.

Thank you
