[PATCH v2 0/8] docs: sysctl/kernel.rst rework

Hi,

A recent discussion about differences in the "panic" description in
sysctl/kernel.rst led me to look into completing that file, and it
turned out that more work was needed than documenting "panic". This
patch series is the first batch, making the resulting documentation
hopefully nicer and more accurate. It doesn't add fields that are
present in 5.5 but not documented; I've started adding these, but I'd
rather submit them individually once the basic kernel.rst is
committed, to make it easier to request review from the appropriate
maintainers (each patch adding documentation should be mergeable
separately, without needing a patch series).

Changes in v2:
* in the first patch, drop the first kernel version mention, leave the
  copyright lines alone;
* in the second patch, merge : and ::, drop a smartquote in favour of
  a plain quote;
* in commit messages, give the references used for the documentation;
* add a script to check the documentation against the code;

[PATCH v2 1/8] docs: pretty up sysctl/kernel.rst

This updates sysctl/kernel.rst to use ReStructured Text more fully:
* the list of files is now the table of contents (old entries with no
  corresponding sections are added as empty sections for now);
* code references and commands are formatted as code, except for
  function names which end up linked to the appropriate documentation;
* links are used to point to other documentation and other sections;
* tables are used to make lists of values more readable (as already
  done for some sections);
* in heavily-reworked paragraphs, sentences are wrapped individually,
  to make future diffs easier to read.

The first mention of the kernel version is dropped. The second
mention, saying that the document is accurate for 2.2, is preserved
for now; I will update that once the document really is accurate for a
current kernel release.

it against 5.5 shows for example that sysctl/kernel.rst has two

Some people object to the introduction of unnecessary non-ASCII text, and
this one would count; can we take the © symbol out?

Now for the bigger thought...  I wonder if what we really want to do is
to adopt some form of the kerneldoc format for sysctl knobs?  That would
allow the documentation to be placed in the source right next to the
table entries, which might, in the optimistic world I inhabit, help
developers to keep them up to date.

That, of course, is more work than what you've done; until somebody feels
inspired to do that work I'll happily accept a tweaked version of this
script.  But one can always dream...

Right, that occurred to me too. In fact, it seems to me that in an ideal
world, we wouldn’t even have the big tables of sysctl entries, since that’s
another level of indirection — in most cases, the relevant information is
available where the sysctl variables are declared, not where they’re
registered in the tables. This leads to disconnects between the reality of
the code and sysctl table entries, for example ieee_emulation_warnings which
is (for now, I’ve submitted a patch which has been accepted) still present in
sysctl.c but isn’t used.

I’ll fix up the script and re-submit it.

The SPDX tags got changed at some point, but the kernel community
declined to follow along.  We're being difficult as usual...:)
