Hi all,

*Note well*

This tree has nate had any build testing at all. As such, it probably
doesn't build :-) This tree is really just a roll up of the current state
of the trees when the v3.2 merge window opened. It will not be put into
the build system referred to below.

The linux-next tree remains available from
git://github.com/sfrothwell/linux-next.git . But this will probably be
the laste one available there.

It is also back on git.kernel.org. The patch is still absent, however.

This tree is certainly broken on sparc :-(

Changes since 20111014:

Dropped tree: ptrace (at the maintainers request)

The arm-soc tree gained conflicts against the arm tree.

The at91 tree lost its conflict.

The s5p tree lost its conflicts.

The libata tree gained a conflict against the at91 tree.

The scsi tree gained a conflict against the s390 tree.

The bluetooth tree lost several conflicts but gained another agains
Linus' tree.

The security tree probably lost its build failure.

The pm tree gained a conflict against the s390 tree.

The tip tree gained conflicts against the cputime tree.

The driver-core tree gained a conflict against the net-next tree.

The tty tree gained conflicts against Linus' tree.

The staging tree gained a conflict against the net-next tree.

The moduleh tree gained conflicts agains the xen-two and Linus' tree.

The akpm tree gained conflicts against the driver-core and block trees
and I dropped a few patches that had turned up elsewhere.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have created today's linux-next tree at
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git
(patches at http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/next/ ). If you
are tracking the linux-next tree using git, you should not use "git pull"
to do so as that will try to merge the new linux-next release with the
old one. You should use "git fetch" as mentioned in the FAQ on the wiki
(see below).

You can see which trees have been included by looking in the Next/Trees
file in the source. There are also quilt-import.log and merge.log files
in the Next directory. Between each merge, the tree was built with
a ppc64_defconfig for powerpc and an allmodconfig for x86_64. After the
final fixups (if any), it is also built with powerpc allnoconfig (32 and
64 bit), ppc44x_defconfig and allyesconfig (minus
CONFIG_PROFILE_ALL_BRANCHES - this fails its final link) and i386, sparc
and sparc64 defconfig. These builds also have
CONFIG_ENABLE_WARN_DEPRECATED, CONFIG_ENABLE_MUST_CHECK and
CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO disabled when necessary.

Below is a summary of the state of the merge.

We are up to 199 trees (counting Linus' and 27 trees of patches pending
for Linus' tree), more are welcome (even if they are currently empty).
Thanks to those who have contributed, and to those who haven't, please do.

Status of my local build tests will be at
http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next . If maintainers want to give
advice about cross compilers/configs that work, we are always open to add
more builds.

Thanks to Randy Dunlap for doing many randconfig builds.

There is a wiki covering stuff to do with linux-next at
http://linux.f-seidel.de/linux-next/pmwiki/ . Thanks to Frank Seidel.

Linus convinced me that it may be useful to do the builds anyway, so the
results will start appearing at http://kisskb.ellerman.id.au/linux-next
over the next few hours. Take the results with a grain of salt, some
failures may have been caused by my merge fixups (and sparc will fail due
to me applying a fix for a bug that no longer exists :-().

If you do it this way, you also need to select everything on which NET
depends on. In v3.1, that would be (only) NLATTR which in turn does not
depend on anything else.

Furthermore, I am noticing in v3.1 that CRYPTO_MANAGER selects
CRYPTO_MANAGER2 which in turn has the following dependencies:

config CRYPTO_MANAGER2
	def_tristate CRYPTO_MANAGER || (CRYPTO_MANAGER!=n && CRYPTO_ALGAPI=y)
	select CRYPTO_AEAD2
	select CRYPTO_HASH2
	select CRYPTO_BLKCIPHER2
	select CRYPTO_PCOMP2

I think you need to copy those dependencies into config CRYPTO_MANAGER.

That's correct, but it's better not to "select" an entire subsystem
like NET at all.

I agree; I add to my comment the implication that --- as a rule of thumb
--- "select" should be avoided if the option to be selected has further
dependencies.

A downside of "config A\n depends on B" is of course that potential users
of option A who are unaware of option B or not interested in B may miss how
to enable A. Sometimes, a comment in the Kconfig file can help then.
Example (from linux-2.6.36/drivers/ieee1394/):

comment "PCILynx controller requires I2C"
	depends on IEEE1394 && I2C=n

config IEEE1394_PCILYNX
	tristate "PCILynx controller"
	depends on PCI && IEEE1394 && I2C
	select I2C_ALGOBIT
	help
Say Y here if you have an IEEE-1394 controller with the Texas
	  Instruments PCILynx chip.

This one had been addressed in target-pending.git/for-next with a
module.h include for target_core_cdb.c, but I'll change this now to use
the proper export.h.

Thanks Randy!

Except that export.h does not exist in Linus' tree yet. Just leave the
module.h there and it will be changed sometime later.

Got it. Thank you for the heads up Stephen.

Are there any use cases where a config (probably embedded) would wantq
CRYPTO_USER but not CRYPTO_NET? Would seem a shame to pull in the entire
CONFIG_NET stuff just for what appears to me to be a few utility routines (I
know there's still a few people out there fighting kernel bloat).

In any case, I suspect that sort of restructuring will be 3.3 material - this does
look like the right fix for this merge window.

Since the CRYPTO_USER interface sits on top of netlink I don't
see how you could possibly avoid NET.

Thanks,

Oh, OK. The original bug report looked like just some utility functions not
defined, so I didn't pick up on the "it needs netlink" aspect of it.

Thanks for the report. This is now fixed.

Cheers,
Samuel.

This still fails on linux-next of 2011-1102 (was it fixed for 1103?
I haven't checked those builds yet.)

This build failure is still present upstream, in v3.2-rc1 and later
kernels.

Thanks,
