dmesg(2.6.31.1) and kernel config attached,
let me know if you need any other information.

Thanks.

PS. When using 2.6.32-rc8 and 2.6.32,the same problem happened
twice, but i can't reproduce that. With 2.6.32.2, it always happens.

There were no libata changes in 2.6.32.2 that should have affected this.
Are you sure the .config is unchanged? Have you rechecked that 2.6.31.1
still works?

Yeah, running 2.6.32.1 now, no problem.

dmesg shows:

ata1.00: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)

When booting 2.6.32.2 with the same config, I get

ata1.00: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 301)

Weird.

CCing linux-ide and Tejun. Could be some kind of timing difference
triggering the problem, perhaps?

You are right, it's definitely timing related.

I just tried capturing the failed booting message through a null modem
cable, but the problem goes away! It seems that I can't reproduce it
with serial console attached.

dmesg attached.

Hmmm... this is the second report of probing failure with SIDPR based
hardreset. Can you please apply the attached patch and see whether
the problem is reproducible? And if so, please attach full boot log.
Can you please also attach hdparm -I output of the occassionally
failing drive.

Thanks.

Hi,

with this patch, the problem still exists.

ata1.01: XXX debounce start, SStatus=4
ata1.01: XXX debounce done, SStatus=4, DET stable for 520 msecs
ata1.00: SATA link down (SStatus 0 SControl 301)
ata1.01: SATA link down (SStatus 0 Scontrol 300)
...
VFS; cannot open root device ...

The kernel just panic, and I can't see what's the messege printing before
that.

So, I tried 'console=ttyS0 console=tty1',full dmesg attached。

Hey,

Could it be an idea to do a bisect for the patch that makes it break? :)

Hi, it's timing related.

I just tried booting with an initrd, and i want to capture the full error
message, but with initrd, the problem went away.

The only difference between the two config is:

Right now, I can reproduce this problem only when I
running 2.6.32.2 with a specific kernel config.

If I attach a serial console or use initrd to capture
the fail boot log, the problem disapeared. Even running
2.6.31.1 with the exactly same config, no problem.

So I will say that it's very hard to reproduce this, it's very
subtly timing related.

I remember when running 2.6.32-rc8 and 2.6.32, the same
problem happened twice, I just can't reproduce it.
And with 2.6.31.x, never running into this.

Oh well.

Can you please capture full failing log? In the attached log, ata1.00
is detected successfully.

Thanks.

Hi, I can not capture the full failing boot log.
The kernel panic, and shift + pageup does not work.

With output to serial console, the problem goes away.

I think with an initrd, I can reproduce the problem and capture the full
failing boot log.
But with an initrd, there's no problem. Every thing works fine.

Thanks.

Ah... right, I forgot about this.

Hmmm.... can you please try netconsole? Netconsole usually doesn't
introduce much delay and should be able to extract the log without
affecting timings.

Thanks.

Can you please try this one? Retry logic was wrong in the original
patch. With this patch, you should see one "link resume succeeded
after %d retries" message when the original kernel would have failed
probe. Can you please test this patch and post boot log with such
message?

Thanks.

Just reboot 3 times, and test STR, every thing works fine.
And the 3 reboots have the same message:

ata1.00: link resume succeeded after 1 retries

Thanks.

Yesterday, the boot message has no such line(just boot 1 time).

Today, there is.

$ dmesg | grep ata1.00
ata1.00: link resume succeeded after 1 retries
ata1.00: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)
ata1.00: ATA-7: WDC WD800JD-60LSA5, 10.01E03, max UDMA/100
ata1.00: 156301488 sectors, multi 16: LBA48
ata1.00: configured for UDMA/100

Thanks.
