Hello Alan and Erik,

The Linux Kernel mailing list does not seem to be
bearing any fruit with this APM/ACPI issue regarding
clean power-off/reboot. Are there any other groups
that you are aware of that might have interest in
investigating this bug?

--Chris

**************************************************
I still have linux-2.4.9-ac9, with the dmi_scan.c patch,
and the APM configured as you suggested. My computer
bios is set to ACPI=off (even with this 'on' the behavior
is the same).

shutdown -h works correctly
shutdown -r hangs at "Restarting System".

Im not aware of any. When you get to "deep in the bios it breaks" then
there isnt much we can do. With the DMCA being passed and macrovision code
found in PC bioses folks in the US risk 5 years in jail just for trying to
help

Well, you might try ACPI and ask questions about that on the APCI
mailing list (see https://phobos.fs.tum.de/mailman/listinfo/acpi ),
maybe they know about a ACPI workaround (warning: ACPI is hairy).

I hoped that the dmi_scan.c patch would make the shutdown work so we
could differentiate between your laptop and that other Compaq laptop,
but unfortunately it doesn't. I currently don't know of a way to fix
your problem.

As a sidenote: Alan, would it be a good idea to have the DMI data
available in an easy way without having to ask people to edit
dmi_scan.c? Simple proc interface, or a kernel command line option, for
example.

Right, this might give some clues to diferentiate between board
revisions. Now we only need the output from a Compaq 12XL125 to see if
it differs.

But the most important question now is: does it work? Can you halt and
reboot your machine?

You may try to use the kernel-option "reboot=bios".

Just as another datapoint, I'll attach a copy of my dmesg and .config,

Compaq Presario 1600S K6-2-450, 192 meg of ram. Exhibits the same
problem, hangs on shutdown -r, halts and powers off gracefully with
shutdown -h.

The last time I remember reboot working properly under linux was when I
had rh 6.2 and a 2.2.x kernel.

OK, so at least the system switches off.

Any reason why this is not enabled? There's no much use for APM without
it.

Hmm, that's a clue, it's not a 12XL125. Could you try this patch to see
if it works?

Could you also tell what the kernel thinks about your laptop? It should
print things like "BIOS Vendor: Phoenix Technologies LTD".

Another thing is this ID 'Compaq 12XL125'. This another
model of laptop. The my Compaq Presario 1685 is another
beast altogether.

What are the consequence of this mis-detection?

With 2.4.9-ac9 'shutdown -r' does not work. The
halt '-h' flag does work. '-r' hangs at "Restarting System."

I set my machine bios to acpi=no, and also acpi=yes the same
hang occurred both times.

Here is the APM config:

CONFIG_PM=y
# CONFIG_ACPI is not set
CONFIG_APM=y
# CONFIG_APM_IGNORE_USER_SUSPEND is not set
# CONFIG_APM_DO_ENABLE is not set

# CONFIG_APM_DISPLAY_BLANK is not set
# CONFIG_APM_RTC_IS_GMT is not set
# CONFIG_APM_ALLOW_INTS is not set

This was discussed awhile back, maybe there are answer.

Compaq Presario 1685.
My bios supports ACPI

the roboot option "shutdown -r" does
not work with this laptop when I compile
either APM or ACPI. The behavior is a little
different with each one.

When my bios is set ACPI=NO, and APM is compiled in:
A 'shutdown -r' hangs after the "Restarting System" message.
Depressing the power switch cause a power off.

When my bios is set ACPI=YES, and ACPI is compiled in:
A 'shutdown -r' hangs after the "Restarting system" message.
Depressing the power switch causes a reboot.

I have a feeling this is ReiserFS related.

dmesg shows:

Try "Use real mode APM BIOS call to power off".

I don't. Why would a filesystem have anything to do with APM or ACPI?
