[NOTE:
Well, we seem to have two reports that are almost 2 months old and with
patches. Somebody care to push those patches to Linus or say why they
 are invalid, pretty please?]

This message contains a list of some post-2.6.32 regressions introduced before
2.6.33, for which there are no fixes in the mainline known to the tracking team.
If any of them have been fixed already, please let us know.

If you know of any other unresolved post-2.6.32 regressions, please let us know
either and we'll add them to the list. Also, please let us know if any
of the entries below are invalid.

Each entry from the list will be sent additionally in an automatic reply to
this message with CCs to the people involved in reporting and handling the
issue.

This is actually a regression from 2.6.33. It should haven been fixed
in rc2 with e1955ca0ee55286cbc65a8ed7471d540ae83dac8.

It hasn't recurred since I filed the bug report (6 days ago), but as far
as I know it is still a problem.

I'm reasonably sure, but not 100%, that it's a regression: I might have
observed it on Debian's 2.6.32 kernel. If so, it happened much less often.

The issue is still there with 2.6.33-rc1, 2.6.33 and 2.6.33.1 too.

Yes, it is still a regression 2.6.33.1 (though fixed in 2.6.34-rc1:
my guess is that it will be left as a regression in 2.6.33-stable,
since it only happens when you have chosen CONFIG_PROVE_LOCKING=y).

This needs retest in tip. I submitted some patchlets to shave a few
cycles, with which my box (fwtw) shows zero regression 2.6.31 ->
tip.today, whereas there was nothing but regression of up to ~6% in
between, magnitude seemingly depending on phase-of-moon. Actually,
patched tip at submission time was a fraction above 31 throughput.
Retesting today, it's a fraction of a percent below again (tbench is
annoyingly jittery).

Hopefully, this tbench regression is on it's way to retirement.

The policy is that we close the regression bugs after they've been fixed in the
Linus' tree, so I'm going to close it now.

If you want it to go into -stable, please let Greg know directly.

Right, but the fix for this issue is too large to go -stable, perhaps.
Lots of related fixes are needed too because of it.

I spoke too soon. It recurred about an hour ago.

I took a look: I tested 2.6.33.1 with bz2 instead of LZMA, the same
issue is still there.

The false positives I introduced should be fixed as of 2.6.34-rc2.
If this bug still shows up in 2.6.34-rcX it indicates a real bug.

This is supposed to be fixed by Eric's patch which is now in upstream.

Thanks!

Just 10 minutes ago I had a similar or maybe an identical problem: When
the laptop woke up from (S3) sleep, the screen was very dim and almost
black, although everything else seemed normal -- e.g. I could use my Fn
key bindings in twm, switch windows, type, switch to a console, etc..

The screen was so dim that I could barely see the outlines of the emacs
and xpdf windows. Restarting xdm (and therefore the X server) didn't
restore the brightness. But it probably is not a hardware problem,
because rebooting the laptop restored the brightness to normal.

Thanks for the update. I'm going to close the bug now, please reopen if you
see the problem again.

I haven't seen the bug recur since March 23rd, although I'm running the
same kernel (vanilla 2.6.33). The X server has been updated slightly
to Debian's xserver-xorg-core 1.7.6.
