I've been going around and around on this. The surround sound 5.1 is

playing fine except channel 0 (front-left) is playing on the woofer.
I have a Terratec Aureon fun - CMI8738-MC6. I can redirect the output on 0
to right-front successfully using .asoundrc and "ttable.0.1 1". I have
gotten desperate and have tested this card in Windows and was able to
get it working right there. I have been using the file
www_lynnemusic_com_surround_test.wma through mplayer and speaker-test to
to test the setup. I am using pulseaudio, but I reconfigured my system
without pulseaudio and get the same result.

Any help would be much appreciated.

And the software's front left channel is also playing on the front left
speaker? And the subwoofer channel isn't playing on any speaker?

I do not understand how this is related to your problem.

In other words, what happens is this?

speaker output
----------------------
front L silence
front R front R
center center
bass mix of front L + bass
surround L surround L
surround R surround R

What happens when you run speaker-test with 4 and 2 channels?

I've been going around and around on this. The surround sound 5.1 is
playing fine except channel 0 (front-left) is playing on the woofer. The
card is a Terratec Aureon fun - CMI8738-MC6. I have
gotten desperate and have tested this card in Windows and was able to
get it working right there. I have been using speaker-test to
to test the setup. I am using pulseaudio.

This is the summary of my results with speaker-test:

speaker-test -c 6 -D surround51 -t wav
speaker output
  ----------------------
  front L silence
  front R front R
  center center
bass mix of front L + bass
  surround L surround L
  surround R surround R

speaker-test -c 4 -D surround40 -t wav
----------------------------------------------------
front L silence
front R front R
center silence
bass mix of front L + bass
rear L rear L rear R rear R

speaker-test -c 4 -t wav
speaker-test -c 6 -t wav
speaker -test -c 2 -t wav
---------------------------------
front L silence
front R front R
center silence
bass mix of front L + bass
rear L silence
rear R silence

I have removed pulseaudio again (recompiled all software with optional
pulseaudio support without pulseaudio support) I should be outputting
directly to alsa and the driver now.

Under pulseaudio speaker-test gives error messages when surround40 and
surround51 is specified.

Thanks
Tom

Smells like something is messed up with the alsa driver. Someone in
alsa-devel can probably help you best here. Could be a strange mixer
setting but I doubt it.

That is massive overkill. I'd just stick with your distro's packages
rather than recompiling everything and disabling PA support.

The speaker test using the names surround* etc. do not use pulseaudio
anyway.

> Under pulseaudio speaker-test gives error messages when surround40 and

This will only be true if pulseaudio daemon is running and has the
device open. Much easier to just run speaker-test as:

pasuspender -- speaker-test -D surround51 ...

than recompiling everything :)

But ultimately it seems to be an alsa problem.

All the best

I am using kernel 2.6.35 with a gentoo distribution. Is it possible
that this bug has been fixed since kernel 2.6.35? Is it possible to try
the latest drivers?

Thanks

Tom

OK.

This should be Min-In (I guess your card doesn't have shared mic-in
jack).

I'd guess you don't need this.

This might have some effect, but I don't know which setting should be
the correct one.

I tried changing these settings, but the Left Speaker is still dead.
The card has 5 analog jacks:

1. Mic
2. Line-In
3. Line Out 1 (Front) / Headphone Out
4. Line Out 2 (Rear)
5. Line Out 3 (Center/Sub)

Plus a Digital-In and a Digital-out.

I have my speakers connected to 3, 4 and 5.

I will retest the card in windows although it worked last time, but it
is a while since I have heard sound from the left speaker.

Regards,

Tom

I am very embarassed. I retried it in Windows and now the left front
sound is clearlly coming out the center speaker and the left speaker is
dead there too. A hardware problem! The left-front speaker sits on the
table right next to where the cats lie. The cats have chewed up the
cable - it was pretty flimsy to begin with. I am sorry to have bothered
you, but I am very grateful for your help. I don't think I would have
solved it so soon without your help.

Thank you very much,

Tom Corner
