I still don't think this is a good general export, it has very
specialized use. For example, from the description it looks like this
can be generally used on any block device and when it returns, we have
synced the queue. This simply isn't true, there are absolutely no
guarentees of that nature unless the block driver itself implements the
__make_request() functionality and has taken proper precautions to
prevent this already.

True. So what do we do? Grit our teeth and move it into MD?

That, or just comment it appropriately instead. Or, perhaps better, make
a real interface that works for both types of devices. It's even
confusing that the final queue cleanup and md can use the same
blk_sync_queue function, it's more by 'chance' than by design because
the driver queue is already in a known and shut down state. So I don't
like it at all.
The blk_freeze_queue() stuff I suggested should work, I'll try and make
a patch.

This is in the nature of what I had in mind. Just test compiled it,
haven't run a test on it yet. I know of at least one problem - the
queue_lock is not necesarily defined for md-type drivers. The drain and
undrain routines need to check for non-NULL q->queue_lock, which is a
bit ugly, but...
I'll fix that and really test it tomorrow. This is just an RFC until
then.

Here's a patch to just correct the comment. The md usage is safe because
it switches ->make_request_fn before syncing the queue and on second
thought it is a bit silly to add freeze/unfreeze functionality that no
one will use right now anyways. Alternatively, we could add this
functionality to the core so the interface would be
/* callers wait for unfreeze */
blk_freeze_queue(q, FREEZE_WAIT);
or
/* callers are io errored immediately */
blk_freeze_queue(q, FREEZE_END_IO);
which would work for both. I'll keep it in mind if such a use becomes
attractive, for now I think we should just correct the comment.

Thanks for this report.
This problem is not specific to amd64.
@Gerd:
This is caused by your bttv updates included in -mm.
As far as I can see, the radio parameter is already handled correctly.
Is the patch below correct?

Yes, it's already in Andrew's inbox, just forgot to delete that and
didn't notice due to modular builds ...

Now the kernel is linked correctly.

IIRC there was a bug in the driver base and a patch from Gred fixing
that floating around, maybe that one helps? If not, the please

Hmm, bttv shouldn't generate IRQs when unused.
Anything suspious in /proc/interrupts?

err, yes. Without that patch the kobject layer will scribble on memory and
all bets are off.

Yet another kobject bug. It uses the varargs list twice in a illegal
way. That doesn't harm on i386 by pure luck, but blows things up on
amd64 machines. The patch below fixes it.

Thank you Gerd!
IMHO the patch should be applied to both mm- and the Linus tree.

Hmm, maybe. I'm not sure who actually implements the varargs (gcc?
Or glibc/kernel?) and whenever the above applies to the kernel as well
or not ...
Cc'ing the kernel list for comments.

varargs is implemented entirely by GCC (GCC owns the stdarg.h header
and implements the builtin functions that are used in the va_* macros).
You can call va_start on the same args list twice, both:
void foo (int x, ...)
{
va_list ap, ap2;
va_start (ap, x);
va_start (ap2, x);
...
va_end (ap);
va_end (ap2);
}
and
void foo (int x, ...)
{
va_list ap;
va_start (ap, x);
...
va_end (ap);
va_start (ap, x);
...
va_end (ap);
}
are ok. What you can't do is e.g.
va_list ap;
va_start (ap, x);
bar (x, ap);
bar (x, ap);
va_end (ap);
(i.e. once you pass the ap to some other function, the only thing that you
have to do with it in the caller is va_end).

Fine, then my patch is ok, it does exactly this ;)

This is how the code looked before I fixed it.

In theory, you can't. But the way how GCC (and probably other compilers)
implement it, you can. Because "ap" is just a pointer (which fits into a
register, if I may add). As such, you can copy it, pass it multiple times, use
it multiple times, and whatever you like.
At least that's IIRC the way TCPP recommends you in their helpfile
(va_list src; ... va_list dest = src)

That's exactly the wrong assumption.
On some Linux architectures you can, on others you can't.
Architectures where va_list is a char or void pointer include e.g.:
i386, sparc*, ppc64, ia64
Architectures where va_list is something different, usually struct { ... } va_list[1];
or something similar:
x86_64, ppc32, alpha, s390, s390x
In the latter case, you obviously can't do va_list dest = src and
if you do bar (x, ap); the content of the struct pointed by ap is changed
after the call, therefore you can't use it for other routines
(as it depends on where exactly the called function stopped with va_arg).

Yeah I originally had that in mind but did not write it out ;)
What would the struct look like? Because if the following was true, then you
could also use a pointer:
int my_printf(const char *fmt, struct { some ints, some char's, whatever } arg)
{
struct giveItAName *ap = &arg;
callanotherfunc(fmt, ap);
callanotherfunc(fmt, ap);
}
>In the latter case, you obviously can't do va_list dest = src and
Mmh, I could, because GCC is wise enough to copy whole structs. This is BTW
done a LOT in the kernel sources. Just compile it with -Waggreagte-return and
ye'll get a whole whopping lot of warnings from GCC. For
linux-2.[46].\d+.tar.bz2.
>if you do bar (x, ap); the content of the struct pointed by ap is changed
>after the call, therefore you can't use it for other routines
Who said the struct is changed? The compiler could use some magic to copy
above-metioned "arg" to a temporary which is only valid during my_printf() and
callees.
Who says the struct has to be changed? And even if it was about to, you could
copy it.
>(as it depends on where exactly the called function stopped with va_arg).
Don't get me wrong, I'm just asking... in a pessimistic fashion.

You left out an important detail:

int my_printf(const char *fmt, struct { some ints, some char's, whatever } arg[1])

Why can't you do dest=src? Assignment of struct to struct has been a
part of C since earliest times. I used it in ~1990 in code which ran on
Z80, Multics, M68k, VAX and Cray2, and it worked without any ifdefs (for
that, there were "just a few" for other issues like 8 vs. 9 bit char, etc).

It is not a struct on those arches, but array of structs.
Just try:
#include <stdarg.h>
void foo (int x, ...)
{
va_list ap, ap2;
va_start (ap, x);
ap2 = ap;
va_end (ap);
}
on say x86_64 or ppc32 and you'll see what I mean:
test.c:7: error: incompatible types in assignment
That's why the standard has va_copy so that you can do the
copying portably.

It's not a struct, it's an array (of one element of struct type). You
can't assign arrays.

int callme(const char *fmt, struct { ... } argp[1]) {

Maybe that way?

Maybe you should just try.

I did not say that 'dest' was an array too, and in fact, was not thinking of
such, but more like:
int foo(struct bar argp[1]) {
struct bar dest;
dest = *argp;
}

But we are talking about va_list, which _is_ an array on some
architectures, and which this thread is all about.
Andreas.

I don't know what you read into my post, I said you can assign structs, I
didn't mention arrays. Other than you can assign elements of array of
struct, dest=src[index] format.
Why did you think I said array?

Hi.
A glxgears causes Xorg to get immediately out; nothing very notable in the
logs, except for
Nov 9 17:57:09 nbsteu kernel: [drm:radeon_cp_init] *ERROR* radeon_cp_init
called without lock held
Nov 9 17:57:09 nbsteu kernel: [drm:drm_unlock] *ERROR* Process 4999 using
kernel context 0
in the syslog.
Note that everything works fine with 2.6.10-rc1-bk18.
Attached, lspci and .config.
Bye

Can you put up a dmesg as well? I think it might be something to do
with DRM core in-kernel, but AGP and card driver as a module,
I wonder should I change the Kconfig for CONFIG_DRM so we have a
CONFIG_DRM_CORE so old configs don't break silently....
Dave.

I've tracked it down to the Kconfig for the new DRM, I'm not sure what
to do with it, if AGP is a module then DRM needs to be a module now
not a yes.... but this probably isn't a hard dependency, i.e. it is
still legal to build DRM as a y but AGP won't be used as it is not in
the kernel.... I'm unsure how to do any sort of weak dependency in the
kernel configuration structure if it is at all possible..
Dave.

Yes, just FYI everything works fine if both options are built in-kernel
and not as modules.
Bye.

This patch removes bttv_parse but not it's prototype from bttv.h

usb storage has some problems; IIRC 2.6.9 is OK, the problem is only in mm
series; I can test other versions but it will take some time :)
Maybe it's a minor bug, but it can freeze usb subsystem...
Short description: inserting usb storage device causes problems and device is
not created; this happens with or without ub driver.
I've already reported this, but not for mm4, maybe something is different,
The device works just fine with 2.6.8.1 as provided with mdk cooker (12mdk),
without ub module, the flash pen is seen as sda1.
tests made without ub configured/compiled. Inseting the device, the usual
behaviour is that it is not seen, only error occurs (see below for full
syslog report). Sometimes (say, after 5/6 insertion/removal cycles) the pen
is seen but scsi layer seem to see it twice, then kobject fails.
In this situation, the removal of the device causes a kernel oops and usb
subsystem is gone, with herratic behaviour.
As said, same device is OK with 2.6.8.1 (and anyway, it should cause not harm
even if it is not working, imho...)
Log report:
plugging in/out the device:

Confirmed for -mm4 on AMD64 (two different configurations). Plain -rc1 works
fine on both.

Just FYI, -mm series on my box always had* the same "trivial" problem:
shutdown won't switch the box off, it just prints "acpi_power_off
called" and then I have to switch it off manually. Not a big deal, but...
Here attached lspci and .config
Bye.
