Is there any kernel branch having PV on HVM already applied and ready
for testing (under 4.0-rc6)  ?

Boris.

I am truly sorry and apologise for it, I would never want to give you
the impression of being disrespectful of you and your work.
If you pay attention I manually wrote in the comments of all the past
versions of the patches that you were the original author, this time I
just forgot.
I guess it is really the time I start using git-send-email :)

Your work has been really important for my series and you deserve the
credit for it independently from which patch series gets applied.

I don't keep using your old patches as a base but I manually rebase over
the most recent patch series you sent every time.
Obviously it is not a perfect system and sometimes I can miss something,
this is why at the beginning I asked you to work together on the same
tree: I wanted to avoid exactly this sort of issues.

My intentions are true so my proposal of working on a common tree is
still valid, just let me know when you are interested.

xen/pvhvm-stefano - my patch series (based on Sheng's work)
xen/pvhvm-sheng - Sheng's patch series

in both cases you need the corresponding patch for xen, in my case it is
this one:

I've applied attached patch to the most recent clone of xen-unstable.hg
Checked out branch xen/pvhvm-stefano and built 2.6.31.6 pvops kernel
based on this branch.
Xen Host reboots right away.

Boris.

Do you have the xen backends enabled in your config file?
If so, could you please try to disable them?

Sorry for stupid question. I believe /etc/xen/xend-config.sxp should be updated.  How to do that ?

Can you tell whether its Xen itself crashing, or if the dom0 kernel is
crashing?

Once Xen is patched, it should be sufficient to run a patched domU hvm
kernel (you don't need to update your dom0 kernel).

Hard to say. Just black screen with no output and reboot.
Usually when Xen comes up and Dom0 crashes , there is some screen printout,
in my case nothing on the screen. Serial console is required again :(

Per yours feed it seems it makes sense try load patched Xen 4-0.rc6 with 2.6.32.9 (stable).  It would be a fair . Right ?

Yes.
I can load 2.6.32.9 ( been built via xen/stable just now) under then most recent Xen 4.0 (matching tip CS Xen's rpms have been rebuilt and reinstalled on F12 following Michael Young ) via clone of original xen-unstable tree patched per Steffano :-

Are you saying that a patched Xen with unpatched dom0 does not crash,

Are you saying that a patched Xen with unpatched dom0 does not crash, but patched dom0 does crash?

I think it might be a problem of the old "enhanced" patch series; surely
this bug cannot affect the new series because the same kernel cannot be
used for dom0 and domU anymore (the new series is applied to a clean
2.6.32 kernel).

Boris, could you please checkout the new branch pvhvm-stefano and see if
it works for you as an HVM DomU?
The xen side patch is still required.

Do you mean check out xen/pvhvm-stefano. Build Dom0 kernel based on this branch.
Load under patched Hypervisor and try to create HVM DOMU.

Please confirm. Maybe you mean something else ?

Sorry , i don't know how to create HVM DomU having just a kernel for this DomU
I did it only via ISO image of guest system (either python profile or virt-install)

Boris.

An HVM domain is similar to a normal qemu emulated machine, so I meant a
kernel that is able to boot on that machine (x86 support, e1000 driver, etc.).

In addition to that if you want to enable PV on HVM you need support for
the PV frontends: enable CONFIG_XEN, CONFIG_XEN_BLKDEV_FRONTEND,
CONFIG_XEN_NETDEV_FRONTEND, CONFIG_XEN_XENBUS_FRONTEND,
CONFIG_XEN_PLATFORM_PCI; avoid the BACKENDs.

As you might know already, the new patch series works as domU kernel
only so this problem doesn't exist anymore.

I decided to chase this bug anyway and it turns out that I was just
missing:

If i understand you right. I have to build kernel per your instructions.
scp this kernel (say "vmlinux") to Ubuntu Karmic HVM DomU.
Login into Ubuntu Karmic HVM DomU and attempt  :-
# ./vmlinux

Boris.
P.S.
Patched Xen 4.0-rc6 & 2.6.32.9 Dom0 already loaded.
Branch xen/pvhvm-stefano checked out and kernel 2.6.32 has been tuned as advised.
Now is building. I have not notice any option to activate backends in yours kernel.

An HVM domain is similar to a normal qemu emulated machine, so I meant a
kernel that is able to boot on that machine (x86 support, e1000 driver, etc.).

In addition to that if you want to enable PV on HVM you need support for
the PV frontends: enable CONFIG_XEN, CONFIG_XEN_BLKDEV_FRONTEND,
CONFIG_XEN_NETDEV_FRONTEND, CONFIG_XEN_XENBUS_FRONTEND,
CONFIG_XEN_PLATFORM_PCI; avoid the BACKENDs.

In fact it means if i am on Ubuntu HVM - patch set has to applied to Ubuntu's kernel
and "initrd"  rebuilt. HVM reloaded
if i am on Fedora Hvm - patch set has to applied to Fedora's kernel and "initrd" rebuilt
HVM reloaded

Boris.

As you might know already, the new patch series works as domU kernel
only so this problem doesn't exist anymore.

I decided to chase this bug anyway and it turns out that I was just
missing:

Once you have copied the new kernel on the VM you have to
edit the grub configuration file in your HVM DomU and point
it to the new kernel, as you would do on native.
Then you reboot and you should be able to see one more network card that
is the pv network card.

Correct.
This is true for both the old and the new patch series.

I believe all the stuff starting with "git checkout" would be better to to perform on
Ubuntu 9.10 HVM. Kernel build, creating ramdisk ant etc. I built in Dom0 - F12.
Not much chance to complete test today (9.23 p.m)

Boris.

Yeah maybe.

I personally build the kernel on a totally different machine compared to
the one I test with, but that is just me.

I believe that is a bug that I fixed in my tree but didn't send to the

Kernel has been built based on the branch from Jermey's Git Repo (xen/pvhvm-stefano)
No patching has been done.

Normal text boot with native 2.6.31-14-server.

It brought me back to idea that kernel and ramdisk have to be
built at HVM (?).

OK. GDM disabled
# gedit /etc/default/grub
 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash text"
# update-grub

Normal text boot with native 2.6.31-14-server.
For text boot with vmlinuz-2.6.32 been built per Stefano
snapshot attached.
It brought me back to idea that kernel and ramdisk have to be
built at HVM (?).

Double checked "make menuconfig":-

Symbol: XEN_XENBUS_FRONTEND [=XEN_XENBUS_FRONTEND]                                                         │
Selected by: XEN_PLATFORM_PCI [=y] && XEN
 [=y]

In .config file :-

E486: Pattern not found: XEN_XENBUS_FRONTEND

Looks like IRQ are not delivered to HVM DomU.
