[linux-lvm] LVM Viewer / Manager app

Hi everybody,

In the progress of working on my much-disputed HOWTO, I programmed a tiny
tool which visually shows you your LVM configuration. A screenshot is
available on http://ds9a.nl/lvm-howto/. Source will be released soon but
its far too ugly now :-)

I'm currenly thinking about making this a full blown LVM manager, does
anybody have ideas on what the best paradigm would be? Perhaps people here
have worked with HP/UX SAM, and have ideas.

Hi,

Regarding visual interfaces for volume managers, my all-time favorite is
the Veritas Visual Volume Administrator VXVA. I'll see if I can dig up a
few screenshots. Mind you, the new version of the volume administrator
(VMVA) traded the older (and in my opinion nicer) graphical display for
a boring list oriented display.

The main reason is that if I write it in perl you need:

	gtk+
	perlgtk+
	libxml
	perl libxml
	perl
	libglade
	perl libglade

These may not be available everywhere, to say the least. Also, I can't make a static version.

Another important reason is that I like C better.

I believe that the SEVM is a repackaging of the veritas volume manager,
which is a GUI that is very difficult to use when a lot of physical disks or
volumes are installed (> 30 or so).

I'll try to keep that in mind. The application is progressing rapidly by the
way, I hope to release 0.2 somewhere tomorrow.

New features are:

	An 'unused physical volumes' node in the tree
	Drag-and-drop of those volumes to volume groups
	Dragging volumes away from volume groups
	Incremental scanning - quick startup

I know this is a old thread, but you are correct.  From what I understand,
veritas has been allowing SUN to package their VM product.  From my
experience, it has been included automatically with anything that has a
StorEdge/Enterprise array attached.  Like any vendor related relationship,
it is headed toward separation from what I hear.

a lot of Unix vendors LVM implementations are OEM Veritas or based on
code licenced from Veritas. eg UnixWare, Digital Unix, Solaris are
ones i'm sure of.

Make it (n)curses based so it can be used on servers which usually
lack any X11 stuff and get remote-administered (sometimes over slow
links).

I'm not sure what to think. On one hand it is visual and it gives an
indication of relative size. On the other hand, I don't understand what it
means. Especially the 'worldview' thing is obscure.

I currently intend to stick with the Column Tree display, as shown on
http://ds9a.nl/lvm-howto/screenshot.gif

Depending on what row you selected, different buttons appear.

To whoever is writing the linux LVM gui:

Please please look very carefully at those screenshots. Then make
sure yours looks nothing like it. The Veritas GUI (as i've
experienced it in Unixware 7) is the worst POS ever.

I had a course in Unixware and even the instructor couldn't get it to
work. (and he knew his stuff).

yuk.. please avoid it like the plague.

Yes, it's vxva for Veritas Volum-Manager 2.5 for Solaris.

hehe. Well, the vxva GUI is (IMHO) more fancy than functional.... and
it's not that fancy :-)

Still, maybe some good things can be learned from it...

I must agree. I was upgrading our Solaris mail server last night and spent
hours and hours (until 4am) screwing with the Veritas VMSA GUI. And this is
the almost latest version Java GUI. Eventually I gave up because it was slow,
non-intuitive, and merely system()'s off comand-line commands anyhow. I
started learning the command line stuff and now I am much better off for it.

However, I must admit that Veritas tech support is darn good. They always
answer my somewhat complicated questions quite well and were very responsive.
But for the amount we pay as a big corporate customer, they darn well better!
Now I get especially irritated when I get crummy bonehead support at home as
an ordinary user.

Hopefully one of these GUI apps can one day be used in a distributions GUI
install process and we can have nice LVM disk management from day 1. It
appears that there are two GUI's being worked on, is that correct? Is it
necessary?

I'm not aware of the other one. I currently have two projects, one is the
stabelising of the lvm-viewer/lvm-manager, which currently has more features
than stability.

The other project is a a way to convert a filesystem 'in place' to a volume
group.

A third project could be to research if it is possible to get the Linux
kernel to boot from a logical volume, without using initrd.

I'll try to find time to take simular screenshots for the newer vmsa. 
The interface is change quite dramatically and personally I think it
is an
improvement.

I tend to agree. In shops where volumes are fairly minimal it might be nice.
In one of my oracle shops however, we used raw and ended up with well over
5k volumes defined. VERY, VERY messy with this GUI. Although, when dealing
with this many objects, any GUI is going to be a bit clunky. I use command
line in every case anyway, so this isn't really targeting me either. 8)
