Hi,
  I seem to be having lots of troubles with the RealTek chipsets. I have
one onboard and two PCI-e cards and they all have the same problem. They
will not transmit anything. The r8169 driver does it, as does the
r8168-dkms module.

It's a new setup so it might of never worked. It's not likely to be a
hardware problem as its three different devices.

I've sent what I think you might need for starters, but if there
is extra stuff you'd like to see, let me know.

I'm using a stock Debian kernel
3.12-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.12.6-2 (2013-12-29)

I've included the lspci output of one of the cards below. I'm not
really sure what else you'd need to check things.

The problem shows up the same, the TX dropped counter increments.
I'm not sure why 42 packets made it out (or even if they really did)
Receive works fine, I can even start up wireshark and see packets
pass by.

eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:e0:4c:80:66:57
          inet addr:192.168.1.222  Bcast:192.168.1.255  Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::2e0:4cff:fe80:6657/64 Scope:Link

          RX bytes:584930 (571.2 KiB)  TX bytes:5083 (4.9 KiB)

ethtool -S shows a similar story, not sure if the rx_missed counter
is another problem:

I've disabled the on-board device now, but the simple lspci output was:

You may check that the onboard nic device does not even work when the
extra PCI-e card aren't plugged.

A complete dmesg including the XID lines that the r8169 driver prints
would be welcome.

There are very few places where the r8169 driver modifies tx_dropped.

Please increase the driver verbosity with the 'msglvl' option of ethtool.

It seems safe to ignore as long as it does not change after startup.

Hi,
  Thanks for looking into this.

It definitely doesn't. I've tried with only the onboard device
and no other NIC device (r8169 or not) installed and its the same
problem.

See attached text file. I'm not sure why I get so many interface up
messages. This is for the two NIC cards. I can pull them out and go back
to the onboard one if you like.

I don't see that transmit queue timeout message that often. It looks
like it might happen once per boot and then giveup.

I set it at 65535 but it didn't seem to make much difference.

If I:
  * rmmod r8169
  * modprobe r8169 debug=1
  * ifconfig eth0 ....
  * ethtool -s eth0 msglvl 65535
  * ping -I eth0 ...
I get the following:

If it helps, I know the tx_dropped is happening on line 5837 of r8169.c

			rtl8169_unmap_tx_skb(&tp->pci_dev->dev, tx_skb,
					     tp->TxDescArray + entry);
			if (skb) {
				tp->dev->stats.tx_dropped++;
				dev_kfree_skb(skb);
				tx_skb->skb = NULL;
			}

Should I understand that the LOM fails on Linux with a naked motherboard ?

Please check if runtime resume is disabled (/sys/bus/pci/devices/.../power/control
should be 'on'). If so and you do not see many netdev watchdog messages either,
these could be real link status change events.

Please do (and send a complete dmesg).

Your previous posting suggests that the LOM board is a 8168b but I haven't
seen its XID.

It could help to check the add-on 8168c in a different computer whose
motherboard does not include any networking chipset from Realtek (nor
any bios that could confuse different revisions of those).

Please don't switch between the r8168 and the r8169 modules at runtime.
I saw it in your dmesg and I won't claim it's supported.

I'll be out for work during two days.

Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by LOM. There is no Lights Out Module. I have
now removed the two ethernet cards and enabled the motherboard NIC.
I'll leave it like this. There is one ethernet card that uses a
8139too module.
The relevant interface is:
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 06)
	Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd Motherboard
	Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 72
	I/O ports at d000 [size=256]
	Memory at fdd00000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4K]
	Memory at d2100000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=16K]
	Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 3
	Capabilities: [50] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
	Capabilities: [70] Express Endpoint, MSI 01
	Capabilities: [b0] MSI-X: Enable- Count=4 Masked-
	Capabilities: [d0] Vital Product Data
	Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting
	Capabilities: [140] Virtual Channel
	Capabilities: [160] Device Serial Number 01-00-00-00-68-4c-e0-00
	Kernel driver in use: r8169

eth5 is the working r8139
eth6 is the r8169 that we're interested in.

That's fine. I was doing it to see if it would work. I'll stay with the r8169
for now. I got a watchdog notice now, not sure if that is better or worse.

Thanks.

It's the usual Tx failure symptom.

(8168evl on a fairly recent motherboard, bios could be upgraded)

Did you enable the iommu in the setup ? If not, please give it a try.

That caused some excitement...
I got a page of AMD-Vi Event logged IO_PAGE_FAULT device 02:00.0 domain
0016 messages.
And then it sat at "waiting for /dev to be fully populated"
The keyboard seemed dead at that point. I'm not sure of the exact
message and if it is important I can make it die again.

I had to turn that off to get anywhere. Then we were back where we
started.

I've also at times rebuilt the r8169 module to add more printk lines.
I can tell you that each packet makes it to rtl8169_start_xmit and
returns NETDEV_TX_OK because the number of printk lines for my enter
and exit equal the number of tx dropped packets.
