Except for plug&play. The high level summary: LIRC has developed it's own way of doing things. It has its own device protocol, user space daemon, tools, etc. No one is denying that all of that works. The alternative is to rework IR to use standard kernel interfaces (evdev, sysfs, configfs), standard user space tools (udev, ls, mkdir, cat) and make the daemon optional. Since IR hasn't been added to the kernel yet we are still free to design the user space API before locking it in stone for the next twenty years.
