Well, I don't have direct experience with any of those clients, nor with
trying to chat on MSN from Linux. But I do read some computer news, and
have seen articles recently (within the last month?) that talk about an
impending M$ plan to cut off their network from other chat clients. I
understood that this was to apply to all non-M$ clients as well as to
earlier versions of M$'s client as well. Maybe this explains the trouble
you're having?

Hi,

Recently I got my internet connection up at home again and
downloaded the latest versions of Alvaro's MSN Messenger for
Linux and Ayttm for Linux. These are clones meant to get me
into MSN Messenger chat. But they keep failing, saying my
username and/or password are incorrect.

I can easily sign in with MSN Messenger 6 on the same
machine---I dual boot with Win98---but I'd much rather use
Linux :-)

Does anybody have any experience with this? And can anyone
lend a hand? Thanks.

This seems likely. The latest version of one of the clones
I use tells me that MSN Messenger is using a new protocol
and new security, something about SSL, and would I like to
download a small patch to handle this? I said yes, and got
the patch ... but even that seems to be a little behind the
curve. Well then it's back to good ol' Yahoo Messenger for me.

Thanks,
Yawar Amin

If the original poster is referring to the Sourceforge project

         http://amsn.sourceforge.net/

it purports to work with the "new" (post-Oct 15) MSN standards ... that
is, version 0.83 does. So if that (or something later) is what he means by
"latest version", this is *probably* not the problem.

ayttm, OTOH, does appear to be too old (at least in its Debian incarnation
- I can't seem to find the upstream home of this project) to support the
new protocol.

It would be easier to diagnose the problem if we had a better description
of what it was. "But they keep failing, saying my username and/or password
are incorrect" is inexact. Please post again, this time including exactly
what you enter (conceal ONLY a password with Xs, nothing else) and exactly
how each program responds. Details always count. Could this be simply a
(local) permissions problem, for example?

Build gaim with ssl support on. You will need mozilla installed with all
the nss and related libaries along with openssl.

http://gaim.sourceforge.net/

you need to run version .71 or up. They also have binaries for windoze.

Hi,

Gaim ROCKS! It's the most polished IM client I've ever seen
in Linux, and it handles MSN just fine. Oh, I didn't even
have to compile it or anything. The SourceForge RPM for RH8
works fine.

Thanks very much. Life is easier to bear now :-)

As I only use the yahoo chat I can't comment on the MSN
connection issues.

But yahoo did change the way that people login into their chat
servers for the ymsg protocol, otherwise the ymsg protocol
didn't change.

Many yahoo chat capable clients have been updated for this, eg
zinc, curphoo, gyach and gaim.

For it to work in gaim you have to get one of the recent
versions, if memory serves me right at least version 0.7 or
newer

I had trouble compiling gaim from source because of some
dependency regarding ssl, so I don't have a personal experience
using it, but I have seen several people in chatrooms using it.
There are some prebuilt packages on gaim.sourceforge.net but I
haven't tried any of those.

Good luck anyway
James N.
